About this listen

Adrian Mole is 39 and a quarter. Due to his financial situation, he has been forced to move next door to his parents. And his numerous nightly visits to the lavatory lead him to suspect prostate trouble.

As his worries multiply, a phone call to his old flame ignites powerful memories and makes him wonder - is she the only one who can save him now?

The narrator was brilliant, the story was typical Adrian Mole however, the book ended with two major story threads unanswered.

Adrian’s life (at this point the same age as me) seems to be one of the bleakest I have ever listened to. Finished this book thoroughly depressed and hoping my own life doesn’t take a similar turn for the worst.

Well written, well read but thoroughly depressing

I was somewhere around age 17 when I began reading the Adrian Mole novels; I loved them then and love them now. This last book is my favourite by far of the series. I like where Adrian is at this time in his life, how he is and how he has matured into a really decent man. It is absolutely packed with fantastically drawn characters like Pauline, Bernard and Mr Carlton Hayes; I was really drawn into the story and cared about them and was rooting for them to succeed. Sue Townsend manages to grasp and to convey to us, the essence of the various personalities and does this with all ages equally well. Gracie's unforgettable rejoinder when admonished for telling lies and warned she will end up like Pinocchio- "I WANT to be a wooden boy!" made me laugh so much I had to go back to relisten to what I had missed whilst laughing. Despite the serious aspects of the book which made me feel sympathy and empathy, humour is never far from the surface. And as most of us know who have faced serious illness, redundancy, relationship break ups, finding humour inamongst it all is a lifeline. The book ends so satisfactorily, too, I gave a little delighted clap at the last few words and had, as my nephew used to say when little "a cry in my eye". Sue Townsend was a genius and I am just so sorry about her untimely passing.
Last but by no means least, a word on Mark Hadfiekd's narration. I found it simply unmatched in it's brilliance. He has just theright tone for our hero and he is fully reading the story, not just reading tbe words. He imbues life into every character, his pitch is perfect and there were no jarring pronunciations or bizarre emphasis on words which can totally change the meaning of a sentence. He was an absolute joy to listen to and enriched the experience for me no end. His is narration that made me glad I had listened rather than read this book. In all, wonderful and I shall always listen to The Prostate Years when I need the comfort of a wonderful story, beautifully read.

I've lost count of how many times I have listened.
