About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

We're constantly told the same things about the monarchy:

But the monarchy is good for tourism..
It isn't! Evidence points to some royal weddings actually having a negative impact on inbound tourism.

But the monarchy makes a big difference to charity..
Of the approx. 1,200 charities with a royal patron, 74% had no contact with their patron during the preceding year.

But everyone loves the monarchy..
A January 2023 poll showed support for the monarchy is down 55 percent.

It's wrong in principle and it doesn't work in practice. It doesn't have to be this way.

They say Britain should be proud to have the mother of parliaments, to be a shining beacon of democracy and an example to other nations. But there's an elephant in the room.

At the heart of power is a single family. They weren't elected but they live off the public purse. They aren't accountable to anyone, and yet between them they are privy to more government secrets than many cabinet ministers. Divinely appointed using a special hat, the head of the family is your superior, you his subject. Apparently he is guardian of our constitution - but we're also told he wouldn't dream of interfering in politics.

If you accept the monarchy, you must accept the moral compromise that comes with it, from its erosion of the principle of equality to the secret interference in our laws. But the good news is that we don't have to accept it. True democracy is within our reach.

'A crucial, riveting polemic in support of one of the most precious things humanity has built - democracy itself' OWEN JONES

'Graham Smith shows what fools our rotten constitution makes of us, with a monarch as emblem of a country beset by nepotism, backhanders, chumocracy and inherited privilege. Read and rebel!' POLLY TOYNBEE

Sets a new gold standard case for a democratic republic.

Republican readers will come away with confidence and optimism.

Undecided readers will understand why this matters and will be drawn in compelled to form an opinion.

Any reasonable royalist or monarchist reader should (even if not convinced) come away with a greater understanding and respect for the the democratic republican case.

The detail level is pitched perfectly. The author's respect for and grasp of the great historical and hugely complex financial details and legal issues is clear and not waved away. But the book remains clear and concise. Inspirational without padding or padgenty. If this is your first introduction to these issues the book may lead you to explore all of these in greater detail.

Advocates of any other constitutional reform could learn from this book's structure and approach in setting out their own case.

The narrator was well picked for the tone of the book and helped me fly through it.

Brilliant clear and reasonable

This book is for both Republican’s & Monarchists, it is both informative & thought provoking. We as a nation are capable of stepping up to the problems we face today without being dragged down by a monarchy, which is so entwined in our laws yet when it comes to corruption of the elite is powerless to stop the abuses of politicians & corruption. We live in a feudal state with laws that the monarchy firmly dictates their absence from. I am a citizen in name only if I am a subject to a greedy feckless institution who cares only about keeping its Top Dog position. The monarchy being head of the church is a joke & the exclusion of Catholics specifically is abhorrent in this the 21st Century

Well Thought Out

Plenty of reasoned arguments and facts that even a staunch monarchist wouldn’t necessarily know. If you don’t know how powerful the office of prime minister is, this is a must listen for you as well.
Paints a vision of a world post monarchy that sounds wonderful as hell to me!

Not just for republicans!

EXCELLENTLY NARRATED, everyone should read this book and then lets all get together for an honest debate on why we should keep the Monarchy

A MUST READ

An very interesting read. Arguments for UK becoming a Republic and ousting the Royal Family, who just take money and give nothing much back Patronage does not cost them anything except their time which compared to a normal working week, is a drop in the ocean. Also expels the myth that the Royals bring a lot in overseas visitors therefore money.
