About this listen

They are icons of the literary world whose soaring works have been discussed and analyzed in countless classrooms, homes, and pubs. Yet for most listeners, the living, breathing human beings behind the classics have remained unknown - until now. In this utterly captivating audiobook, Dr. Elliot Engel, a leading authority on the lives of great authors, illuminates the fascinating and flawed members of literature's elite. In lieu of stuffy biographical sketches, Engel provides fascinating anecdotes.

You'll never look at these literary giants the same way again.

l enjoyed it but not sure of the music in the Frost. I rather found it distracted me from the poems.

My first exposure to Wilde, Poe and Frost. I do like poetry, even moreso now I've listened to this excellent audiobook.

Educational

I really enjoyed the history of these three artists and the included excerpts of their work. Some of the narration however, is difficult to listen to, and you can really tell as the stories are a flat. Especially if you listen to a lot of audiobooks. There is also music over the poetry which is quite loud and detracts from the rhythm.

An interesting compilation

I enjoyed the biography sections, but the poem and story readings not really. Some of them were read so boringly, I almost fall asleep. The RAVEN was excellently performed though.
And the pointless, distracting background music ?
I just cannot comprehend why anybody thinks that we need noise behind the words of poems or novels or any kind of audio book.
By the way, I strongly disagree with the author's opinion of Oscar Wilde being ugly. I find him very, very handsome. Beside, Edgar Allan Poe's face looks deformed which begs the question if his mother was really that beautiful as the author let us to believe.

BACKGROUND MUSIC ? REALLY ?
