About this listen
Read by AudioFile Golden Voice Simon Vance.
The latest gripping Inspector Lynley mystery from the No. 1 international bestselling author. The brand-new Lynley TV series is on iPlayer now.
Amid the beauty of Cornwall’s coastline, the death of a local man shatters the peace with its violence . . .
The body of Michael Lobb is discovered in his family’s tin and pewter workshop, and as Detective Inspector Beatrice Hannaford investigates, it emerges that Lobb was the only remaining obstacle preventing the purchase of local land by a mining company.
The complexity of the case only increases as Lobb’s family life, rife with mistrust and deception, comes to light. The tangled web of intrigue soon draws in Bea’s colleagues, Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers, who must search for a killer in a community that has very little trust in outsiders . . .

Old fashioned and out of touch

I’m no prude, but Michael’s chapter upon chapter ramblings about his sex life with Kayla, really gave me the ick. The story was shallow, and none of the introductory characters evoked either love or hate in me.
However, the thing that really made me scream was the performance and assumption that us Brits spend our lives talking in old English.
How on earth did Bea (short for Beatrice) become Beer?? Every time her name was uttered I felt my blood pressure rising. Also, I don’t think I have ever used the phrase “I’ll wager” in my life, but it was used in nearly every sentence in this book. “I bet” no other native to Cornwall does either.
Bring back Barbara Havers as we know her please, along with Taymullah Azhar and Hadiyyah. I do like Salvatore Lo Bianco, but he’s not right for our Barbara. Lynley needs another Helen, Deirdre is not her. Anyway, I will get to the end, but please Elizabeth, make your next book one we can get our teeth into, like we know you can.
This nearly had me in a straight jacket….
