Summary
The brand-new heartwarming romance from the Sunday Times best-selling author of A Country Escape and A Secret Garden.
Caro Swanson has taken a job in a remote part of Scotland.
She’s answered an ad in The Lady: being a companion to an elderly gentleman who lives in a country estate could be perfect! Surely it is time to make a change and do something different for a while?
The fact that she may also see Alec, the young man whom she met some years previously and whom she has always thought of as her ‘one who got away’, is of course purely incidental.
Soon Caro is falling in love - not only with Alec but with the stunning house and grounds she is now living in. But the estate is in financial difficulties, and it quickly becomes apparent that there is only one way to rescue it.
So begins a magical romantic summer that will take Caro to London to the south of France and back again to Scotland in search of a classic lost perfume that might just restore all their fortunes.
Romance, humour, a cast of warm and totally believable characters and the possibility of happy ever after lie at the heart of Katie Fforde's wonderful new novel.

Interesting storyline, a fraction over long.
I read Katie because she always has an interesting and well researched storyline and presents her books in a well constructed way. Maybe, also, I read and listen for some light relief from more complex novels. A Rose Petal Summer was maybe a little too long to support the story, and there weren't many surprises.
I wasn't madly keen on Jilly Bond's rather 'mumsy' delivery in this book, it rather grated on me bringing a picture to my mind of a sixth form prefect rather than an attractive young woman. I liked her better in A Summer at Sea, and I'm not sure why. It was something to do with the emphasis on on the last syllable of so many words? Such a 'no nonsense' approach - can Jilly do wistful, I wonder? I couldn't reconcile the picture her voice brought to my mind with the words I was hearing.
I won't dwell on the plot, it was a light romance so we know girl will get man from the moment they meet. That's why we read them, I suppose. I must say that the likelihood of such a man making perfumes did seem a long stretch of the imagination, but it was an interesting subject. So difficult to find new ideas for plots! And I had to suspend belief with the rather unlikely immediate friendship with the starlet and her producer husband-to-be.
Katie Fforde mostly is pretty reliable, apart from one or two midway in her career, when I thought they were getting a little too Mills and Boonish, but she is well and truly back on track these days, and doesn't disappoint. I enjoyed the book on the whole, although some of her other novels were better.

Just a delightful story for summer
I absolutely loved listening to this story, it was just the essence of summer. The narrative was easy to listen to and the story was utterly charming.
I would recommend this audio book to anyone who wants to relax with a glass of wine and listen to a charming story.

Warm and delightful
Katie Fford delivers another warm and engaging story that's as comforting as chocolate, hot buttered toast and soft pyjamas! My only teeny tiny criticism is the narrator is older which makes you feel the main character is too but she's only 41

Easy storyline
Easy storyline, somewhat predictable. I persevered as the accents by the narrator were awful & seriously difficult to listen to the stereotypical Scottish shrill & the American drawl.

Lovely escapism
Loved it, don't get tied up in the likelihood of these things happening in real life and just enjoy.

Good Listening
Good storyline, set in London, Scotland and France. Audible helps to bring it alive with the different accents, which I don't think you would get from reading. Thoroughly enjoyed and would recommended especially to fans of Katie Fforde.
