Summary

Every step...

Paul Davis forgets things - he gets confused, he has sudden panic attacks. But he wasn't always like this.

Takes you closer...

Eight months ago, Paul found two dead bodies in the back of a coworker's car. He was attacked, left for dead, and has been slowly recovering ever since. His wife tries her best but fears the worst....

To the truth...

Therapy helps during the days, but at night he hears things - impossible things - that no one else can. That nobody else believes. Either he's losing his mind - or someone wants him to think he is.

Just because he's paranoid doesn't mean it's not happening....

You Can Bank on Barclay's Stories!

There is no doubt in my mind that Linwood Barclay is an author you can literally bank on when you want to guarantee yourself a quality read. His latest thriller about Paul, a man who is almost killed in a violent coincidence really is no exception. After an explosive start we get to meet a recovering Paul and follow his story as he tries to piece his life together gradually. But he forgets things, hears things and the whole story almost channels Stephen King for some time.

The characters and their situation are well developed and there are considerable twists, for anyone that manages to guess the complete story before the end phase of the book I tip my hat to you because I certainly didn't. I guessed some right and some very wrong and one event in particular really did take me by surprise. It's for these reasons and of course the quality of the writing that I would recommend this as a genuinely intriguing character-based thriller with only the last few chapters possibly going a little overboard in terms of over-explaining what had gone on.

The narration by Jared Zeus is well done, I don't think I've heard him before but he is engaging with a decent range of character voices and knows how to ratchet things up when the story demands it. Possibly he makes the lead sound a little bit weak at times but it's a good performance.

In summary this is a really decent package with only the ending possibly being a little over-cooked.

Linwood, welcome back!

Over the last 10 years, overall Linwood Barclay has been one of my favorite authors. But recently I'd started to give up hope. His last really decent novel (in my opinion), was Trust your Eyes and every single novel prior to that were absolutely outstanding and gripping page turners, with a bit of humor and twists throughout and at the end that got me every time. I personally found the promise falls trilogy to be awful and just could not get into them.

This one, however, is definitely Linwood back to his best, as good and as gripping as his pre 2014 stuff. Any book that keeps me hooked, and makes me find time to listen to go an listen is always a winner.

Some lovely twists in this one, and when I thought I had it worked out, I was wrong, again. Can't wait for the next one now!

Oh dear!

Totally disappointed long time fan. Complete waste of money imo
Dragging storyline, weird supernatural bits, no sympathetic characters. Hope this is an aberration, looking forward to the next one

Really good book!

I really enjoyed listening to this book! Although this is the first Linwood Barclay book I have read where my predictions of what is happening have been correct. I still enjoyed it though, I think it shows how many of his books I have read that I can tell where his stories are headed.

Decent Yarn

A decent yarn but was able to work it all it a bit too easily and I am usually crap at doing that.

Glued together

Enjoyed the start but it seemed to have about three different writers involved and although this created unexpected twists there was a kind of lack of a pay off. Depressing cos I enjoy this writer normally.

Boring, predictable, no plot, unlikeable characters

I’m a fan of Linwood Barclay so was really disappointed in this book. It dragged on and on and on with nothing really happening. The “twists” were evident miles out and it was a chore to finish the story, not really caring what happened to any of the characters.
