‘Tense, clever and bitingly observed. Superb’ Claire Douglas

Her secrets will be the death of you…

When Pixie moves into Columbia Mansions, divorced Gwen is quick to take the younger woman under her wing. But as Pixie becomes entangled with her charismatic landlord Alec, the lines of friendship begin to blur.

With rumours of illicit goings-on swirling, Gwen soon realises Pixie isn’t the only one with something to hide. How well does she really know the neighbours she considers her friends?

As scandal erupts, old grudges resurface, leading to a crime that will destroy the peace of Columbia Mansions forever.

Sunday Times bestseller Louise Candlish returns with this gripping, twisted story of neighbours, secrets and murder.

I love Louise candlish and reading this off the back of 'our house' and'the other passenger' etc I had great expectations. This just didn't grip me! It was ok, but felt a little 'gentle', a bit 'day time tv'. The big incident didn't make much sense either, more tacked on as an after thought. I might re listen if I need a gentle tale but I'm in no hurry.

Had high hopes but a bit disappointed

I enjoyed listening to this story the characters are varied and interesting. The story is told well and I didn’t expect the turn of events which inevitably lead to the murder. My only criticism is that I couldn’t fully understand the reason for the murder or why they didn’t try and get away with it. I will definitely listen to more of Louise Candlish.

Great story with a twist at the end

… but sadly fell flat on its face about three quarters of the way through. I really enjoyed the start of this novel, and was quite gripped. It had great characterisation, a potentially solid plot and a good deal of suspense. I loved the way it was written in the first person, and the twists and turns were great, until they weren’t. The story kind of got lost along the way. I felt, it lost momentum and the guilty party seemed to come right of the rails, in a not believable manner. Characters blew hot and cold, and were unpredictable and unrealistic. It deteriorated into a mesh of trying too hard to be clever and got quite annoying. I had already invested many hours in it was this point, and kept going in the hope that things would improve and that all the holes in the plot and the many questions, would be answered. They weren’t. I hate books that this that have loose ends, and this book was all loose ends. As others have said the ending was truly disappointing, it just petered out, gave a few gasps and it was over. A Frustrating listen.

Had great promise

The performance was OK, though some voices dragged on too much. The SMS and messenger sound alerts were a bit disconcerting at the beginning, but were otherwise fine.
What made this book terrible, however, was the main idea and the complete lack of a single likable character.

[Spoiler alert!]

Pixie thinks she is entitled to have whatever she wants. And, because she's pretty, she simply waits for someone to solve all her problems. She knowingly agrees to an improper offer from a man, fully aware from the start what it involved. Then, she takes a loan from an elderly person, spends it on fun holidays, blocks the lady who gave her the loan, and cuts off all contact. Is she portrayed as 'the bad guy'? No. Instead, she's framed as the 'victim' who 'wasn't trusted' and who reaps all the benefits in the end. She and the equally passive and selfish son. What a guide to leveling up your life!
Gwen was annoying in her nosy way, but at least she was well-meaning. She at least tried to do the right thing, believed she was doing the right thing... until the very end of the book when she suddenly did the very wrong things.
So what's the point of this book? Living accommodations problems and the ways how to solve them?

Frustrating! Not a single likable character.
