Amazing!
- By Ann on 30-10-21
Summary
Costa Award winner and Guardian Prize winning author Patrick Ness delivers an extraordinarily moving novel about coming to terms with loss.
The monster showed up after midnight. As they do. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming.... This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.
It wants the truth.
Critic reviews
"Exceptional.... This is storytelling as it should be - harrowing, lyrical and transcendent." ( The Guardian)

Amazing book, very powerful and emotional.
I am going to start by saying what a fantastic book this was, the narrator Jason Isaacs really brought the book to life the way he betrayed the monster especially was excellent and his talent really shone through especially with this character. I am not going to say much but the book itself as I do not want to give anything away for future readers, although I am going to say is that I would highly recommend this book to anyone whether you are an adult or not, I know This book is officially meant for younger readers but I think adults can enjoy this book equally. I gave it a five star for everything because I felt the story it was good and handle a real situation in a compassionate way also the narrator was fantastic and displayed exactly the right emotions, overall I felt this book was very powerful and well worth the read. As a visually impaired listener, the narrator really brought it to life in the mind as specially at the end, I felt I was there with The main character, throughout the whole story.

A Monster Calls!
I bought the film on a whim, it looked rather interesting. It brought a few tears to my eye while watching it, beautifully done, the actors and actresses were brilliant and the storyline was a very imaginative lesson of coming to terms with loss and changes of personal circumstances.
I recently decided to try audiobooks, while scrolling through to find something appealing I came across A Monster Calls! I thought it would be interesting to see the similarities between the book 's and the film's storyline and as I fell in love with the film I thought it's the perfect story as my first audiobook.
I listen to this book most nights, Jason Isaac has a wonderful reading voice! He takes on the roll of each individual character brilliantly! The story itself is something everyone can relate to with a powerful message and an imaginative flair.
I have and will continue to recommend this book and film to family members, friends and others who are looking for something new and exciting to read and watch.

Was I impressed?.
I had to take a second to reflect once I'd listened to this to decide whether I had enjoyed it, I then remembered I'd started the book at 8am in the car on the way to work and had finished it by 9pm that night...the TV hadn't gone on once...so it's safe to say I was pretty glued to it.
I liked the underlining metaphor that the story portrayed, the relationships between the characters was descriptive and encapsulating at times. Honestly there were times where I felt bad for Connor and times where I was getting fed up of his brattish behaviour.
I took a look at the cast for the film once I'd listened to this to see if the characters in my head matched up visually....I'd say they did apart from his grandmother...Sigourney Weaver (are they alright?) and the dad who is played by Toby Kebell (who is way too cool to be playing the part) atleast in my head. Ultimately the story will keep you engaged, it is exactly how it was meant to be...which is a message that when it comes to death you've just got to tell the truth.

A great story and a great narration, too!
The story is heartbreaking but incredibly honest. It's also beautifully written. It shows how different people deal with guilt and loss, and I was able to see a little bit of each character in me as well, which I always appreciate.
I loved the narrator too! The voice of the monster is really engaging, with a certain tenderness to it even when he's mad. Great rhythm and tone. A really enjoyable performance.
If you're looking for a quick but deep story, and don't mind the tears, go for it. It's totally worth it.
