About this listen

Costa Award winner and Guardian Prize winning author Patrick Ness delivers an extraordinarily moving novel about coming to terms with loss.

The monster showed up after midnight. As they do. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming.... This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.

Critic reviews

" A Monster Calls fuses the painful and insightful, the simple and profound. The result trembles with life." ( The Indpendent)
"Exceptional.... This is storytelling as it should be - harrowing, lyrical and transcendent." ( The Guardian)

I had to take a second to reflect once I'd listened to this to decide whether I had enjoyed it, I then remembered I'd started the book at 8am in the car on the way to work and had finished it by 9pm that night...the TV hadn't gone on once...so it's safe to say I was pretty glued to it.

I liked the underlining metaphor that the story portrayed, the relationships between the characters was descriptive and encapsulating at times. Honestly there were times where I felt bad for Connor and times where I was getting fed up of his brattish behaviour.

I took a look at the cast for the film once I'd listened to this to see if the characters in my head matched up visually....I'd say they did apart from his grandmother...Sigourney Weaver (are they alright?) and the dad who is played by Toby Kebell (who is way too cool to be playing the part) atleast in my head. Ultimately the story will keep you engaged, it is exactly how it was meant to be...which is a message that when it comes to death you've just got to tell the truth.

Was I impressed?.

I purchased “A Monster Calls” as a daily deal not knowing what to expect. At first I thought it was going to be a children’s book.....how wrong could I be, brilliantly written & read, it turned out to be hard hitting & without doubt the best book I’ve downloaded from Audible to date.

Brilliantly written & read
