About this listen

A newly married couple with a flair for the macabre buys a Queen Anne-style manor that echoes their gloomy insides. Once the pair met and committed themselves, both knew there was no way to escape from the other—even in death.

Conrad and Elizabeth Fleischer, their surname meaning “butcher”, are beautiful and find that they need only each other to satisfy their sliver of desire to be social. They seldom leave their beloved manor, which is occupied by their united souls.

Though Elizabeth finds she depends much more on her husband, he needs no one, and his unusual job as a hit man underscores his belief. Conrad forces Elizabeth to question what role the legal system has in executing revenge. Do families of victims feel vindicated after the legal process has concluded, or would they rather have a brutal avenger snuff out those who prey on the innocent?

After a particularly gruesome job committed by the Fleischers, the police make an appearance and abruptly end what the couple had just begun…a loving marriage brimming with the stench of death.

A macabre tale of fierce and rare romance with unique characters that push your boundaries. Asks questions about love, morality and justice - how far do you take it and based on what value systems? I found it gripping, despite some of the graphic scenes making me wince and scrunch up my entire body. Takes some interesting journeys into the darker parts of our internal imagery and human urges and desires. I only scored a 4 because the narration was a bit hurried for me, I listened on 0.9x which I've never had to do before, I prefer more pauses after the end of some sentences and statements. But it was fine, really.
Overall, a 5 because I also recognise the nods to another writer and philosopher, and I am thrilled to see those themes and principles form part of the foundations for more writers.
I really enjoyed it and recommend it highly for anyone not too squeamish!
