About this listen

Margate, 1786. Dairymaid Molly Goodchild dreams of a better life. Up at the crack of dawn to milk her uncle's cows, the one comfort of her day is her friendship with apprentice gardener Charlie.

When dashing Naval Officer Nicholas arrives in town, Molly's head is turned by his flattering attentions, and she casually spurns Charlie - believing this is her chance to escape a life of drudgery. Yet when Molly needs Nicholas most, he lets her down.

With her hopes in tatters, Molly is forced to flee Margate for London, where she finds herself struggling to survive. What will she risk in her search for a better life? And will she ever find the love she deserves?

I really enjoyed this book as well as the others in the trilogy. The way Lynne Francis captured the essence of the era in the Kent area was remarkable. The vivid imagery of the quaint villages to the sprawling manor houses and London life transported me back in time. Molly, the protagonist, was a character I quickly grew fond of. Her journey from a humble, innocent maid to a woman of strength and resilience was inspiring. I found myself rooting for her with every obstacle she faced, and rejoicing in her triumphs. The author has a great ability to breathe life into Molly and the other characters. The historical background provided by Lynne Francis added another layer of depth to the story. It was evident that she had done extensive research, as the details of daily life, societal norms, and even the political climate of the time were seamlessly woven into the narrative. This attention to historical accuracy made the story all the more immersive, allowing me to truly understand and appreciate the challenges faced by Molly and those around her.
