About this listen

It's December 1967, and the town of Kinloch is cut off by heavy snow. With all roads closed, the only way to feed and water the townsfolk is for the fishing fleet to sail to Girvan for much needed supplies.

But the skipper of the Girl Maggie, Sandy Hoynes, has a problem. First Mate Hamish has, to everyone's astonishment, been chosen as Young Fisherman of the Year by a Glasgow newspaper. Marooned in the town and with one eye on a scoop, their reporter decides to join the fishing crew on their mercy mission. The thought of the publicity - and some remuneration - delights Hoynes. But Hamish hasn't told him the whole story.

As the blizzards worsen, the crew of the Girl Maggie embarks upon a trip like no other, encountering ghostly Vikings, gigantic crustaceans and a helpful seagull.

Another enjoyable book from Denzil, great to hear stories of young Hamish, love these Novellas while waiting for the next Daley book, always so much wit which has you chuckling to yourself... love the way David Monteath reads these books, he really is the king of narration!

Brilliant as always!

Small fishing community reacts to severe snowfall. Wry humour, characters, 1960s viewpoints, and a touch of psychedelia and the supernatural. More of a straightforward narrative than its predecessor ‘Empty Nets and Promises’, which was a masterpiece of interwoven stories, and so a tough act to follow. Very enjoyable, and a nice nod to ‘One Last Dram Before Midnight’ and the jet necklace in the prologue.

Another enjoyable 1960s Kinloch story

Great writing, narrative and narration.
Thumping good listen with suspense, humour and action. I hope more is written filling in the background from the DCI Daily books. The central characters are not missed as the link is through Hamish. More of both please.

Another excellent listen.
