A lifetime of duty

Widowed at just seven-and-twenty from her marriage of convenience, Eliza, now Countess of Somerset, is bequeathed a fortune, hers to keep – provided she can steer clear of scandal.

The promise of love

The last thing she expects is to be torn between two very different men – a face from the past, whose loss she’s always mourned, and a roguish poet, who scorns convention.

A taste of freedom

But a lady’s reputation is fragile and with jealous eyes on Eliza’s fortune, it will only take one whisper of gossip for her to lose it all…

Escape with the most delightful, historical romance of the year from the Sunday Times bestselling author Sophie Irwin!

‘A very modern sensibility, witty and fun’ Adele Parks

‘Fans of Bridgerton will enjoy this well-observed Regency story with a plucky protagonist.’ Candis

I could not get on with the narration, it reminded me of a teacher reading to a young class. Speeding it up helped but I think I would have enjoyed reading the book much more. I enjoyed the fact that I couldn't predict the ending.

Good story but..

Good story but the most irritating narrator. She sounds less annoying when played at 1.2x speed

Better when played at speed

I began this listen a week ago listening for maybe half an hour here and there but by the end of this story I was desperate to know what was going to happen and the last part I listened to for a solid 2 hours. After listening to Sophie Irwin’s previous book with Eleanor Tomlinson as narrator - who was absolutely spot on - it did take a while to adjust to this narrators tone and delivery, but adjust I did with Melville’s voice being particularly good.
I truly did not know how the story would end given how much Eliza’s new independence clearly meant to her. A brilliant tale and well worth listening to. I am now a confirmed Sophie Irwin fan and cannot wait to hear what the next ladies guide tale will be.

The more I listened the more I wanted to know

I was a bit doubtful of the story at first but it surprised me pleasantly. The structure and vibe is definitely Jane Austen however a lot more modern take on it. But if she was from this Age I feel like the stories would be a lot similar to this author's books.

Great story

Well worth the listen and investment in the characters. i like how the strains of imperialism and empire dovetails into interracial romance and identity

A conventional romance made lively by the cast of characters.
