Summary

Fat, unlovely Roberta Teys is found beside her father's headless corpse, wearing her best dress and with an axe in her lap. Her first words are: 'I did it. And I am not sorry,' and she refuses to say more.

Inspector Thomas Lynley and DS Barbara Havers are sent by Scotland Yard to solve this particularly gruesome murder. And as they navigate their way around a dark labyrinth of secret scandals and appalling crimes, they uncover a series of shocking revelations that shatter the façade of the peaceful Yorkshire village.

Gaping holes left by poor abridging

I read the book many years ago and the characterisation was superb. Tommy Lynley's longing for his lost love jumped out of the pages as did Barbara Havers' 'diamond in the rough' carapace.
This abridgement stripped all of that away and jumped choppily from one scene to another with the barest of cohesion. Characters were bit parts and a great first introduction to Lynley and Havers was cheapened as a result.
Please, do edit out the St James' though- the series is weakened by their two dimensional presence...

great start to the series

super narration, although bookabridged, very fast-paced. Just a shame others not in series. Great read and promising start.

The Beginning

I’ve read Elizabeth George’s latest two books and I was interested to see how Linley and Havers began. Compared to the other two it was a little bit stilted and much shorter but nevertheless, looking at it as an introduction it was fine. I’m looking forward to the next in the series to see how it all develops to the present. day. There is intelligence in the writing.

interesting

I listened this almost in one go, it seemed a little different to other linley stories, lots going on, sad, desperate but uplifting at the same time. would recommend.

Gripping

Loved this. Keeps the tension right to the end. Jacobi is compelling as the narrator
