About this listen

Halloween Night, 1954. A young, film-obsessed scriptwriter has just been hired at one of the great studios. An anonymous investigation leads from the giant Maximus Films backlot to an eerie graveyard separated from the studio by a single wall.

There he makes a terrifying discovery that thrusts him into a maelstrom of intrigue and mystery - and into the dizzy exhilaration of the movie industry at the height of its glittering power.

This whole story is so different from anything you'd expect from Ray Bradbury - it took me 20 minutes to finally realise there was nothing other earthly going on, and that it's all based around a film studio! It's quirky, funny, entertaining, and had me chuckling aloud on the beach.

Andrew Garman read the novel very well. His voice was lively, not monotonous like some narration. The phrasing was all spot on, and the voices he gave individual characters meant you could even picture them in your mind. I would recommend this as something for Bradbury lovers, but also as a good introduction for those who steer clear because they don't like science fiction.

If you’ve been lucky enough to read Death is a Lonely Business, you’ll discover our struggling writer turned amateur detective is now all grown up, married to Peg and writing for the movies in LA.

More madness, murder and mayhem ensues with the gorgeous characters Crumley, Constance and Henry all returning to help our hero discover the truth.

An absolute joy.

What a ride! Like coming home.
