About this listen

For Frank Harte, impoverished schoolteacher, January in London means a yearly fight to survive. A former soldier, his injuries have barred him from all but the lowest paid posts, and the cold incapacitates him still more.

The chance to work as tutor to Viscount Gracewater, son of the famous big-game hunting Earl, comes as a lifeline to Frank. The Earl’s Knightsbridge mansion is huge, elegant - and, most temptingly, kept warm from basement to attics. Viscount “Scapegrace” Gracie, used to foreign climes, is delicate. He’s also wild, charming, and only five years younger than Frank himself. His innocence and feckless good nature soon endear him to the quiet, reserved tutor. But the Earl’s house is a dark one beneath its bright veneer, and the Viscount is in the thrall of unscrupulous Arthur Dickson, a handsome, brutal parasite who’ll stop at nothing to retain his power over Gracie’s heart and soul.

Edwardian secrets burgeon as Frank begins a battle to free his student, confronting along the way the knowledge that he’s losing his own heart to this brilliant and beautiful young man.

Narration: This was the first historical audio I’ve listened to so the narration did throw me to begin with but I quickly got used to it and Callum Hales narration is really good throughout with a distinctive voice for each character.

Story: The storyline overall was good with some intrigue/darker going ons however I think some of the subplots were tied up a bit quickly and an extra chapter or two would have rounded it out more. The main character Frank was endearing and through him you did get some feeling for the other lead Gracie however with it being a single POV Frank was much more rounded. You got an impression of growth for Gracie as the story moved on however with it being relatively short book this felt slightly rushed at times.

Style: The writing itself was good, this is the first Harper Fox for me and I have added another couple to my list as I enjoyed the style and pace of the story overall.

Overall enjoyable listen

I enjoyed the performance from Callum Hale, beautiful voice, accurate reading, incredible acting, so engaging, congratulations to him!!!

The story was very intriguing, it kept me at the edge of my seat, I enjoyed every moment, however some points were a little bit off... the time frame of the events for example!
Overall I had an amazing time with this book, Harper Fox wrote brilliantly, it was magnificent the way that she conducted the story, kudos!!!

I loved the story, the little twist, the overall gentleness of the telling. The narrator did an amazing job and I will definitely look out for his other work.

Another gem from Harper Fox

This is my first historical Harper Fox book and I did not know what to expect from it. The literary flowery language that I fell in love with in other books is further enhanced by the turn of phrase of the era. The story is heartwrenching and Fox once again knows how to portray the utter despair of manipulation and surrender that is saved by a pure heart, brave soul and true love. To not spoil much, while Fox's usual villains are mildly relatable these villains are all foul to the core. Arthur Dixon is the embodiment of "slappable face" and I am delightfully hating on him in my corner. I ranked the story lower than usual because after reading through Fox's masterpieces, this is a good book but not exceptional comparing to the likes of Tyack And Frayne series or Ring around the Sun. Maybe I just like Spooky Cornwall supernatural world more than real one.

Beautiful imagery

I'm new to the historical romance trope and this author. I really really liked Frank and his injuries are what made this story unique and great. Lots of subplots to overwhelm such a short story that could have been used for more relationship development between Frank and Gracie as I didn't feel the connection between the two. But overall, I liked it. A good use of an afternoon and would recommend for an easy listen.

The narration by Callum Hale was fabulous. I look forward to listening to more from him.
