About this listen

'If you are a parent worrying whether self-directed education will work for your child, because you have been told that they have special needs which can only be met in the school system - think again'

Neurodivergent children experience and interact with the world differently to many of their peers. Standard educational systems often fail to adapt to their unique strengths and ways of learning. School, and even the act of learning, can become a source of great anxiety and trauma. Self-directed education offers an alternative to traditional schools that can help neurodivergent children develop at their own pace and thrive.

Blending theory, practical advice and lived experience, clinical psychologist Naomi Fisher introduces the world of self-directed learning and tailoring the learning environment to your child.

This comprehensive overview of self-directed learning is packed with ideas on how to implement it at home and includes interviews from parents of neurodivergent children on how you can make learning differently work for you and your child©2023 Naomi Fisher

A fantastic follow on from ‘Changing our Minds’. I love the combined insight into self directed learning and the ‘PDA’ child. Very validating for me and I wish more people would read it because it lays out lots of what I intrinsically know about my child/children and I wish more people understood and could support without questioning so much.

PDA child…. Read this!

In the final chapter Naomi says she hopes this book has empowered the reader and that is exactly what it has done for me. I feel like my eyes have been opened and I am breathing differently feeling so much better informed that there is another way than pushing my daughter through a system that isn't right for her. And if battling through the EHCP process doesn't end the way we hope we are totally comfortable with deciding to home ed instead.
Every question that came up for me on the journey through this book was answered in a following chapter. It's clear explanations and actionable guidance make it a hugely useful read.

Total game changer

I wish I’d listened to changing our minds by Naomi followed by this book, much sooner in my send parent journey. Te first book will challenge everything you may think about learning and this will open you to another way that will see children thriving in the future. I genuinely feel in the future those stuck in our current system will not be as well prepared for the future as those who are being more child led. Excellent read

A must read early on your send parents journey

Fab! I couldn’t thank the author enough. I gained so much knowledge from this book. It really gave me confidence to educated in a way my gut was telling me to. It was very soothing to hear that neurodiverse families have struggles same as mine, and to learn how they cope with specific challenges on daily basis.

It soothed my anxiety at the beginning of home ed journey.
