About this listen

A Dedicated Man is the second novel in Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks series, following on from Gallows View.

Near the village of Helmthorpe, Swainsdale, the body of a well-liked local historian is found half-buried under a dry stone wall. Harry Steadman has been brutally murdered. But who would want to kill such a thoughtful, dedicated man?

Chief Inspector Alan Banks is called in to investigate and soon discovers that disturbing secrets lie behind the apparently bucolic facade. It is clear that young Sally Lumb, locked in her lover's arms on the night of the murder, knows more than she is letting on. And her knowledge could lead to danger . . .

A Dedicated Man is followed by the third book in this Yorkshire-based crime series, A Necessary End.

Critic reviews

The novels of Peter Robinson are chilling, evocative, deeply nuanced works of art (Dennis Lehane)
Inspector Banks - a man for all seasons, he knows that often the answers to the clues are hidden in his own heart (Michael Connelly)
If you haven't encountered Chief Inspector Alan Banks before, prepare for a crash course in taut, clean writing and subtle psychology. And watch for those twists - they'll get you every time (Ian Rankin)

The story is entertaining but the narrator needs a crash course in the Yorkshire accent. His rendering of the Yorkshire speakers is like nails on a blackboard to anyone coming from the county..... we do not pronounce the T in sentences such as "I went to t'pub " it's more like a glottal stop and difficult to write down but all the narrator had to do was listen to a Yorkshire native saying it .... it is more like "I went to-u-pub" Then there is the word ginnel which is pronounced with a soft G not a hard one and is more like jinnel. Anyway if you come from Yorkshire you have been warned.

Absolutely awful attempt at a Yorkshire accent

I have not read any off these books so have started from the beginning and have to remember these books are set a few years ago. Saying that for me is ok and the story moves along at a good rate beginning to get to know some off the main characters and they are very likeable, I find them a pleasant read not the best but certainly not the worse, the narration is good. Will be downloading more off the books.
