The latest from the Number One Sunday Times Bestselling author Louise Doughty

Bird is a woman on the run. One minute, she's in a meeting in her office in Birmingham - the next, she's walking out on her job, her home, her life. It's a day she thought might come, and one she's prepared for - but nothing could prepare her for what will happen next. As she flees north using multiple disguises, Bird has to work out who exactly is on her trail, and who - if anyone - she can trust. Like many people, she has fantasised about escape for a long time, but now it's actually happening. Is her greatest fear that she will be hunted down, or that she will never be found?

Excellent pacy and gripping novel, brilliantly read by Clare Corbett. I enjoyed this as much as Apple Tree Yard and found it difficult to stop listening once I’d started.

Gripping!

Engaging story and well narrated. Terrible pronunciation of Scottish place names though! Would recommend this overall.

As a character driven story, despite having an eventful life, I just couldn't care about her, bit dull.

Well read

I heard about this book at the Edinburgh book festival. Hype was about, excitement was high. It’s an adventure tale. A young woman, working for one of the secret services, picks up on an oh-so-subtle clue that she’s in danger, and runs. She runs very comprehensively, cleverly and with considerable trouble to herself. It made me want to write a different novel, one in which all the above happens, then, after the heroine has gone to ground in far flung somewhere-or-other it turns out she had the wrong end of the stick in the first place, and nothing untoward was ever going on at all. Of course in Louise Doughty’s “A Bird In Winter” the heroine’s paranoia turns out to be well founded. They really are out to get her. But she gets them, ha-ha, bravo! It’s about one part exciting action to four parts mooning about, self-reflection, remorse, quotidian hum-drum, relationships and so on. I can’t help thinking that’s because it’s a drama written by and about a woman - women in fact. I enjoyed it, especially the exciting bits.

Just Because You’re Paranoid Doesn’t Mean They’re Not Out To Get You
