About this listen

From the revolutionary and ground-breaking author of the books "Entheogenic Liberation," "Being Human," and "Facilitating 5-MeO-DMT," Martin W. Ball, Ph.D. brings his considerable experience and expertise to the topic of what it means to integrate ones experience with the world's most powerful and profound psychedelic.

Back when Dr. Ball dubbed 5-MeO-DMT The God Molecule in 2008, integration wasn't a topic of discussion or concern. Today, integration is a hot topic in the psychedelic world, but what does it really mean, especially when applied to the uniquely profound and powerful 5-MeO-DMT, which, unlike most psychedelics, can reliably produce nondual energetic states of being?

Using his own energetic transformation process from 2008-2009, his time as a nondual energetic practitioner who worked with clients with 5-MeO-DMT (2009-2016), and his present role as a professional nondual integration guide and 5-MeO-DMT facilitator advisor, Dr. Ball describes in one-of-a-kind detail and comprehensiveness just what integration is in this context, which he characterizes as the process of energetic reformatting via the embodiment of nondual energy. Whereas the vast majority of psychedelic experiences still function dualistically where there is an observing and experiencing subject that encounters psychedelic content and objects of experience, 5-MeO-DMT obliterates this apparent divide in direct, nondual experience where the full energy of being is immediately encountered and embodied.

In focusing on the process of embodiment, Dr. Ball deftly presents why this process is not about mental concepts, beliefs, ideas, or any form of spiritual or religious doctrine or ideology. The profound truth of liberated being is available right here, right now, in the embodied experience.

I enjoyed the synthesised soundtrack bites at the beginning and end of chapters, that were created by Martin. A reviewer of another of his audiobooks commented that they cheapened the work and I completely disagree. They add a different dimension. This book is also read well and the writing is fluid and engaging.

The book features some very useful ideas for those who are integrating a 5-MeO experience, but I wouldn’t recommend it to a novice to psychedelics who has experienced little else than 5-MeO, or to someone not familiar with their own psychological makeup-up. Martin can be very persuasive but his is just one lense through which to view the 5-MeO experience, and it might not be helpful for everyone. Along with other resources, a good self-understanding and a good integration guide, the book provides some interesting things to think about as part of your integration process, though. Personally, I very much agreed with some arguments put forward, and disagreed with others.

For those who want to train and work as either facilitators or integration guides for 5-MeO, this book is a must-read, not least because Martin is very much part of the history of underground facilitation of 5-MeO, as he points out in his chapter on history, which focuses heavily on himself. (For an alternative historical perspective, I recommend the integration course by FIVE, in which Rak Razam only mentions himself, in passing, a couple of brief times as he details the history of 5-MeO. And he only mentions Martin briefly. Rak’s is probably a more balanced account. However, Martin’s version of the 5-MeO history was far more engaging to listen to, from my perspective.)

There are, it seems, some strong characters in the 5MeO arena, and most are men. The more narcissistic egoic pushback that can be experienced after taking 5-MeO is more commonly experienced by men, apparently. I wonder if this is because they are traditionally the protectors. Careful and balanced integration is particularly important in these cases, I would argue. This is not a topic discussed in the book, unless I missed it. Yet, as Victoria Wueschner points out in the book ‘Facilitating 5-MeO-DMT’, edited by Martin, ‘…we are now beginning to witness the spiritual trap of Ego-Superiority within facilitators. This occurs when facilitators unconsciously bypass their own personal work and integration while having no one to hold them accountable in their medicine practice or to their personal actions’. Let’s hope that integration specialists don’t bypass their own personal work.

I have noticed that facets of the ego and its defences present themselves up to a few weeks after a 5MeO session, so this can be utilised to one’s advantage with the lenses of mindfulness and self-compassion; and with a grounded and experienced integration guide. Community and mutual relationships are also vital for gaining a balanced sense of self. We may be God, but we are also flawed humans. Including Martin, the Pope and the Dali Lama. So, in my opinion, authentic humility (as opposed to the performative humility that Martin dismisses) is imperative, however many full release 5MeO experiences one has had. Or to whatever extent one might think one is enlightened.

Talking of the latter two religious characters mentioned above, Martin has a clear distaste for religion, and he details this in almost every chapter of this book. However, what religion has offered everyone who has had a non-dual experience is a container. And a community to which one must remain accountable.

As Victoria Wueschner points out, ‘The paradox of 5-MeO-DMT is philosophically intriguing. While it’s a medicine that gifts facilitators a key to higher realms of consciousness, and ultimately spiritual alchemy, it simultaneously offers to facilitators access to the deepest dangers and traps of the ego.’

For me, not as a facilitator, but as a 5-MeO user, interested in my own ego and the ways in which I can unpick and unpack it to support my growth and trauma healing, this paradox can be harnessed. Not to try to dwell in the lofty heights of higher realms of consciousness, but to make my life as an ordinary, insignificant human, more fluid, balanced, joyful, loving and peaceful. ‘Life is the real trip’ as Oliver Martin has pointed out, and the use of 5-MeO within a safe and supportive container along with an ongoing commitment to integration is helping me to embrace this.
