После выхода сокращенной версии "Нечистой силы" в журнале "Наш современник", состоялось заседание секретариата правления СП РСФСР, где публикация романа была признана ошибочной. По существу, секретариат того времени осуществлял акцию дискредитации не только "Нечистой силы", но и всего творчества В. Пикуля. В одном из писем Валентин Саввич так выразил свое состояние: "Живу в стрессах. Меня перестали печатать. Как жить - не знаю. Писать хуже не стал. Просто не нравлюсь советской власти…" Из многих библиотек стали изымать остатки "Нашего современника" с публикацией романа. И все же основная масса журналов, была куплена читателями, книга пошла по рукам, начала свою жизнь.
