Summary

The first in an intelligent, multi-layered crime series featuring DI Eva Harris.

A vicious killer on the loose, a traitor on the team - and a past that’s catching up with her.

Can DI Harris see the truth before it’s too late?

An expert killer who takes his victims’ eyes - can DI Harris see clearly enough to uncover the truth?

On the first day of her new job, Harris is called to the scene of a brutal murder at the heart of Surrey society. A shocking crime, with a meticulous killer: the victim’s eyes have been removed and the body drained of blood, with no forensic evidence left at the scene.

Her boss insists it must be the return of a killer who escaped justice several years ago, leaving a trail of bloody ritualistic killings. Harris isn’t so sure: both sets of victims have had their eyes removed, but other details are significantly different.

But Harris’s desperate desire to uncover the truth is complicated by her secret mission to find corruption at the heart of the police. Who can she trust in her own team? Harris is also hiding a secret past of her own - can she find the killer and learn who to depend on, before her dark history catches up with her?

Robotic narration

A good story, although very technical in parts. I struggled to get into the story initially as I found the narration monotone.

Fantastic book

This book was fast paced, gripping and believable. Louise Brealey reads the book perfectly. I just hope another book follows soon. Great combination.

Had All The Makings of a Fantastic 5* Read/Listen.

This is my 1st Carl Goodman, even although I scored it low, due to it's potential, i will more than likely read/listen to more of their works.

The positives, fantastic characters, their description, back story and how they interact with each other. Excellent plot and just enough tension and twists.

So why did I score it a 3*?

The author pushed fiction and believability to another level. The main character experiences far too many life changing events, (do not want to say too much, so I do not spoil it for others). I am well educated, but even for me, several times the author uses BIG WORDS, which I had to look up, there was no need. Americanisms, in the UK we do not have Highways, we have roads, we have Postmortem's not Autopsies. Then there is the narrator, Louise Brealey, first time I have heard her. She is very clear and concise, but this spoiled the listening. At several point's, it sounded like she was reading to someone, who is English is not their first language.

Give it a go, you may like the things that irritate me, so do not let me put you off.

A struggle

A good storyline that would normally keep me interested but the narration did not help! Really struggled to get through this and just when I thought it was over I found another hours worth of listening.
A good story, interesting characters but not impressed

Great outline multi layered story

Enjoyed the book, sadly found the narrator alittle bland, and the wording was often stop start. Great story, if it was the narrator's first time I'd be inclined to think she was nervous.

An enjoyable story

I really enjoyed the story, but I'm afraid the narrator nearly made me cry off! I found it difficult to listen to at length because of the flat narration, though I know some people prefer a book to be read 'straight' I prefer a change of pace and energy from a narrator, even if the voice character changes aren't greatly varied.

I'm sorry but

The story is good and enjoysble, albeit a bit unlikely in parts. I am sure the narrator thinks clarity of diction is important but someone must tell her that sentences without emphasis and words pronounced by each letter actually spoil meaning - not enhance it. I am really glad I have finished listening.

excellent listen

You need to have a strong stomach to listen to this book , ..Some one is cutting the eyes out off woman and man , there is graphic details of how it has been done obviously someone has to find out who is doing such a vile act , before the culprit does the deed he drains his pray of blood . I am just pleased its a book and not a film as I couldn't have watched it on a screen . A new officer is sent to deal with the crimes and corruption in the police force .
