The Fens are burning, and Detective Nikki Galena faces a cat-and-mouse battle with a killer arsonist. Someone is lighting fires. First they target homes and businesses, but then a body is found at one of the crime scenes. More fires are lit. And at each one a single person dies. But the victims have led spotless lives, and apparently there's no connection between them.
Meanwhile, the town is facing a very peculiar threat from a group of sinister Satanists led by a charismatic businessman. Who is burning with anger, and can Nikki stop them before anyone else dies?

Oh my goodness - this narrator!

The character voices chosen by the narrator have not always worked for me in past novels. However the narrator seems to have steadied herself and the main character voices seem less awkward, apart from the character of Rory. There are many characters in this book so this a challenge for any voice artist.
There are blips in her performance and pronunciation but this time they have not put me off the story line or made reach for the off switch. The noun curate is pronounced strangely on each occasion and has not been edited but I can live with it.
I like the sleuthing elderly ladies, although they are a little absurd but it has allowed the author to add another dimension to the character of DI Nikki and she seems more appealing The introduction of the new boss means the police crew are a happy bunch, so apart from the murders it is an upbeat who dunnit.
The plot is intricate and I don't think I would pass an interrogation about it . On reflection I am not sure where the cult religions fit in . I am also not convinced that the 'Q-rate' would be so dim that he would need so much help from the elderly sleuths and feel we are dipping our toes into Agatha Christie territory rather than the Fens.. Also does the fire investigator work free of charge and why does he look so awful?
I enjoyed this novel, nonetheless, and it is an excellent addition to the Plus catalogue.
