About this listen

The chilling and captivating novel from the NUMBER ONE bestselling author of The Lost Notebook

When Edie’s mother-in-law, Anna DeLuca, dies, she is relieved.

Edie blames Anna for the accident that destroyed her family. So, when her will lures Edie to Sicily and the long-abandoned Villa della Madonna del Mare, she sees through Anna’s games.

Suspecting Anna is meddling from beyond the grave to try to reunite her and her ex-husband Joe, Edie is determined to leave Italy as soon as possible. But before she can, the villa starts to shed its mysterious secrets.

Who are the girls beside Anna in her childhood photos, and why has one of them been scratched out? Why does someone, or something, want them to leave the past untouched? The villa is a place where old ghosts feel at home, but does their legacy need to be laid to rest before Edie and Joe can move on…

I really loved this story and was utterly gripped. Beautiful setting and characters one could easily relate to. Douglas's characters are very real - flawed but lhighly likeable human beings who care about others and making a difference to the planet. The plot unfurls effortlessly and I was intrigued by the contrast of menace and beauty all in one place. Great plot twist at the end.

I didn't take to the protagonist. Grief stricken and self absorbed. The story was very predictable. But I did stick with it to the end.

OK.....but ... predictable mainly

This novel is read well by Emma Powell, who is very pleasant to listen to.
The chapters are fairly short. I found this helpful because of the many interruptions I had and short opportunities to listen to the narration.
The story has a number of layers. These made it very interesting to follow without it becoming overly complex. Characters are defined and atmospheres described beautifully.
I found the “The House By The Sea” to be an interesting, and at times, emotional story that was skilfully written with a real understanding of love, abuse and the effects of loss. Despite the issues that it brought to the surface, it flowed smoothly from start to finish.
A fascinating, intriguing and riveting novel that
I really enjoyed. I hope that you do too.
