About this listen

Let TOP TEN bestselling author Lindsey Hutchinson take you back in time to the Victorian Black Country, for a tale of love, hardship and fighting against the odds to succeed.

Life is tough for Ella Bancroft.

After her father, Thomas, is wheelchair-bound by an accident at the tube works, the responsibility for keeping a roof over their head falls to Ella. Ella’s mother died when she was ten, and her sister Sally lives with her no-good, work-shy husband Eddy, so is no help at all. If she and her father are to keep the bailiffs from the door, then Ella must earn a living.

But Ella is resourceful as well as creative, and soon discovers she has a gift for millinery. Setting up shop in the front room of their two-up, two-down home in Silver Street, Walsall, Ella and Thomas work hard to establish a thriving business. Before long, the fashionable ladies of the Black Country are lining up to wear one of Ella’s beautiful creations, and finally Ella dares to hope for a life with love, friendship and family.

Meeting the man she longs to marry should be a turning point for Ella, but life’s twists and turns can be cruel. As the winter grows colder, events seem to conspire to test Ella’s spirit. And by the time spring is approaching, will the hat girl of Silver Street triumph, or will Ella have to admit defeat as all her dreams are tested.

The Queen of the Black Country sagas is back with a heart-breaking, unforgettable story of love, life and battling against the odds. Perfect for fans of Val Wood and Lyn Andrews.

Another lovely story by by Lindsey Hutchinson and beautifully read by Charlie Sanderson, one of my favourite female narrators.
The story is lovely and my only gripe is it seemed to finish rather too soon. Characters totally believable and the various plots didn't get drawn out too long.

Just a lovely heart warming story.

The story is wonderful, with strong female characters. You just long for them to have a happy ending, but that’s not always real life. It is gripping, funny, emotional, romantic and so much more.

The characters are well developed and the reader does the accents and voices beautifully. You find yourself comparing some of the ladies to people in your own life!

I have only 1 negative and that is that the reader does a very peculiar thing with her S’s. It may not bother other listeners, but it does grate on my ears. She sometimes lengthens them at the end of the sentence and it is very odd and completely unnecessary.

This shouldn’t put you off such a wonderful audiobook though.

Gripping Story

The narrator reminded me of a child standing up in class to read out loud. the spoilt woman constantly sounded like a five year old, the Brummy accents were overdone, and in many places the narrator stopped before the ending of a sentence, which is really bad, considering she was being paid for such a terrible job. when narrators like Annie Alderton narrate, you get lost in the story because they're so good, a bad narrator can completely ruin it.
the story itself was enjoyable enough, but trying to follow the series like Minnie's orphans, and gin barrel lane is extremely hard, This title had nothing to do with either story, but according to books in order on Google, this was supposed to be the next book, it's really confusing trying to read your books in order. there's no rhyme or reason with them, they're supposed to be in order, but they are all different story's. putting the books in order of series, would be far better, then just putting them in order of published date. also other writers put their series together on purchase page, so much easier to go straight to the next in order. little things, but make a huge difference.

good story bad narrator
