About this listen

A KILLER WHO’S SEW EVIL, IT’S SHEAR MADNESS
Fans of romantic comedy mysteries, like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum and Meg Cabot's Size 12 series, grab this seventh book in The Wall Street Journal bestselling series and learn why Maizie Albright’s cases are “raucous and addictive reads” full of “twists, turns, romantic tension, humor, and fast quips!” KINGS RIVER LIFE MAGAZINE'S FAVORITE BOOK of 2021.

“A mixture of adventure, mystery, and romcom. So like Hollywood, you'll never figure out what is real and what is make-believe until you reach the end.” — Laura’s Interests

#DisguisedDetectiving Maizie Albright might have once played a (teenage) private investigator on TV, but she’s now living the (adult) part. Her (mother’s) name is on her business cards. Her (boss’s) appointment book is brimming with new clients. And her bank account has grown large enough to finally trade in her dirt bike for an actual new (pre-owned) vehicle.
While the police begin their inquiries, Maizie starts her own case. She’s needling Black Pine’s wealthy do-gooders, threading through lies, stitching together clues, and ripping out false leads. Her investigation may cost Maizie her job, her relationships, and her life. But by unspooling the truth, Maizie’s darned if they stop her from catching a killer who’s sew evil, it’s shear madness.

I loved this book. I have enjoyed all the books in this series but I think this has been my favourite so far and at book seven that is quite an achievement. There is so much in this story to love but for me I think it was the inclusion of the spy squad, you just have to laugh at a group of four year olds helping to solve a murder. The rest of the characters are just as much fun and I can easily imagine watching them on tv each week. The name dropping is a lot of fun too, as a number of tv and book detectives get mentioned as Maizie, a tv star herself, tries to channel the characters to find the answers and the best style for her. The mystery itself was good and took a number of twists before getting solved. The story is nicely balanced with home and love life but it is firmly and mainly focused on the mystery. Just a great mystery that I would recommend and have to my mum.
With her father and former friend going into business together Maizie is all about helping the charitable organization, Clothing for Kids and that means attending a masquerade party and a photo shoot. So when the former costume designer fails to turn up for her own event Maizie and her plus one, Rhonda, nip next door to find out what is keeping her. They stumble over her dead body and a ransacked house. Who could want her dead? Rhonda doesn't take finding the body very well and then when she gets a threatening note she refuses to leave the house. Maizie decides to handle it a different why by taking on her first solo case. With her boyfriend and former boss Nash busy working for her father, Maizie will need to channel her favourite detective if she hopes to ask the right questions. But being famous isn't all its cracked up to be, especially when there is paparazzi lurking around every corner. Could one of the photos provide a clue? and just how much is she willing to pay for it? What about one of the other party guests? With so many people and even children running around surely someone was something. Maizie thinks so and so does the killer. Another body is found, one that had a connection to the party and the fund raiser. Is someone killing off witnesses? The more Maizie investigates the more she questions just how well did she know her friend? Can she restore her friends reputation, solve the murders and stop someone from targeting her friends and family? Only if she can get some help from some unlikely sources.
I like the narrator, she puts in an excellent performance and very easily brings the characters to life.
