Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A deeply moving and insightful collection of personal essays from number-one best-selling author John Green, adapted from his critically acclaimed podcast.

The Anthropocene is the current geological age, in which human activity has profoundly shaped the planet and its biodiversity. In this remarkable symphony of essays adapted and expanded from his groundbreaking podcast, John Green reviews different facets of the human-centred planet - from the QWERTY keyboard and Staphylococcus aureus to the Taco Bell breakfast menu - on a five-star scale.

Complex and rich with detail, the Anthropocene's reviews have been praised as 'observations that double as exercises in memoiristic empathy'. John Green's gift for storytelling shines throughout this artfully curated collection that includes both beloved essays and all-new pieces exclusive to the book.

Thank you, John

John Green manages at once to tell a story of the human condition and to tell the story of the condition of a human being. The book might have been written to tell one story, but as a different human being from John, I cannot help but read it in my own way and not in his. I don’t believe he’d blame me, though. The Anthropocene Reviewed is not a book that tells *the* thruth about the Anthropocene. It merely tells *a* truth, which is quite enough to make it more than enough.
Though I am required to do so in order to write a review, I won’t rate the book by way of a number of stars - so please disregard the star rating (I also didn’t want to book to look bad, so I left five stars). Rather, I’ll rate it with a paraphrased quote, and please don’t mistake it for nihilism, as I mean it in the best way possible: There are no phenomena, there are only interpretations of the phenomena.
John, I hope you are well.
With love,
Emil

A book about hope!

I really enjoyed listening to this book of hope! In a world that we are all surrounded by negative thoughts about future and our planet earth, John Green makes you feel hopeful and optimistic, reminding us about all the great things in the world that makes living meaningful still.
So many beautiful quotes in this book that I wished to memorize them all!

TW: tears and existential awe incoming

Dear John, I have followed you and Hank online for better half of my life. Your brilliance, knowledge, curiosity and care for our world and humankind never cease to amaze me.

Here I am, sobbing on the morning tram to work. It is too much at times. Too earnest. Too vulnerable. Too existential to bear. But boy is it worth it. John, I too am fond of our capacity for wonder. Thank you for always bringing wonderful things to our attention and awe-consideration. Also your narration is incredible and calming.

Poetic, moving, beautiful

I’m a fan of the Green brothers but have never read any of John’s books until now. This is a thoughtful and moving collection of essays, beautifully read by the author. It brought this aging nerdfighter to tears many times. I give it 5 stars (of course!).

I give the anthropocene reviewed 5 stars.

Obvious review title aside, this book made me cry, it taught me lessons I didn't know I needed, but most of all it made me think a lot about our narrow slice, and how close we might be to the end. definitely a book worth reading, or listening, to.

Never thought I’d cry about a bird duet

This book and John’s reading of it made me write an audible review for the first time.
This book affected me.
Part of it is John’s ability to be incredibly vulnerable about his own personal experiences while assailing you with facts about the broader human condition.
Part of it is forcing me to think about the fairness of Mario Kart while I’m still reeling from the telling of Googling strangers.
John has a way of making you think deeper about what you take for granted and I will be talking about this book for a long time to come.

I give The Anthropocene Reviewed five stars

So many stories of this strange era of history, with large concepts like coronavirus and specific things like a particular song, all melded together with personal anecdotes and quotes from other people, to create an engaging record of humanity's impact on this planet and its life. It's wonderful to hear John narrating his own words, and one chapter in particular really benefits (heartbreakingly) from the audio medium. I give this audiobook of The Anthropocene Reviewed five stars.

Phenomenal

This book is beautiful and poignant. Even though the dread of covid, which features heavily in this book, has largely passed, and even though I cannot relate to many of Green's experiences, his writing is moving and brilliant. At the end of my second listen, I'm still in love with the way this book makes me feel, both whimsical and melancholy. Well worth your time.
This is one of those books that is enhanced by its narration by the author and I truly can't imagine anyone else being the voice of this book.
