There has never been a murder on Alderney.
It's a tiny island, just three miles long and a mile and a half wide. The perfect location for a brand-new literary festival. Private investigator Daniel Hawthorne has been invited to talk about his new book. The writer, Anthony Horowitz, travels with him.
Very soon they discover that not all is as it should be. Alderney is in turmoil over a planned power line that will cut through it, desecrating a war cemetery and turning neighbour against neighbour.
The visiting authors - including a blind medium, a French performance poet and a celebrity chef - seem to be harbouring any number of unpleasant secrets.
When the festival's wealthy sponsor is found brutally killed, Alderney goes into lockdown and Hawthorne knows that he doesn't have to look too far for suspects.
There's no escape. The killer is still on the island. And there's about to be a second death....

Another solid Hawthorn and Horowitz book
3rd Book in the series, and another solid, easy to listen to book. Not quite up to the excellent standards of the first 2 books in my opinion - parts of the story would never happen so left me feeling it was not as realistic as the earlier ones.
Once again, I love the Hawthorn character and the way he so easily snubs people or makes them look foolish, but always comes up trumps on his own account. Once again smiles in weird places as the characters move through the story.
I was pleased I listened to the interview at the end as it made it clear there will be more book in the series. This is really good news.

The series just gets better and better
Fantastic listen, the series just keeps improving. More complex than the previous 2, but brilliantly constructed and kept me guessing till the end. Highly recommended!

Fun and engaging story
A fun and engaging story that has great characterisation throughout. There were a couple of clichéd plot points but sometimes that is no bad thing.
Mostly great narration although some of the female voices did feel a little cartoonish at times.

Great story, totally wrong narrator
Such a shame, a really good typical AH story but why Mr. Kinnear narrated it in such an annoying staccato way I have no idea? It drove me nuts and then had to buy the book to read it myself!

Superb
Can’t wait for next one. Unique style with twists and turns. Hawthorn is brilliantly crafted. Tony is a bit thick and surprised Hawthorn didn’t pick a better author to describe his work. (JOKE). Really clever concept. Good job Anthony Is a lot, lot cleverer than Tony!!!!!!

Another unexpected ending!
The clues were there but somehow you just wouldn't of thought of connecting them! I love the Hawthorne character and as the series goes on I get to like him more. I feel he is not a character to dislike although maybe he is a dislikeable character!!
The author being in these books makes them so interesting and so different. I enjoyed the characters in this book very much. They were very real, very human.
I'm totally hooked and can't wait to get stuck into the next one.

Another great story, sadly let down by narration
Another really good Hawthorne story. The moan characters are really forming well and the relationship between them is building well.too. The mystery is very good and it's a well constructed and relayed tale.
Unfortunately it seems Rory Kinnear is still struggling with female voices. It's a shame because it distracts from the story somewhat.

Very entertaining
Another super story. Thoroughly enjoyed its pace, interesting location and intriguing characters. Placing Horowitz as a character is genius and I’ve never heard of this before. Rory Kinnear is a fabulous narrator especially for Hawthorne. Can’t wait for book 4.

All round winner.
I loved this story, series and characters. First rate storytelling. The voice of Rory Kinner is magical, Terry is my particular favourite.
