About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin

For identical twins, Kate and Violet are about as unlike as two peas from the same pod can be. Except in one respect – they share a hidden gift they call ‘the Senses’, a special kind of intuition that can allow them to see things that are yet to come. After Kate inadvertently reveals their secret when they are thirteen years old, they are set on diverging paths into their adult lives.

Twenty years later Kate is a suburban housewife who suppresses her premonitions in the hope of leading a normal family life, while Violet lives alone and works as a psychic medium. Then one day Violet ignites a media storm by predicting a major earthquake in the St Louis area where they live.

As the day Violet has announced for the earthquake draws nearer, the sisters must grapple with the legacy of the past, the confusion of the present, and the unsettling glimpses they both have of the future.

Loved the story, the characters, everything. And the narrator, Rebecca Lowman, did a superb job of bringing it all to life.

Loved it!

I listened to this book when running. I found I wanted to run more just so I could be listening to this book. I look forward to reading or listening to more of this authors books.

A great listen

This is probably one of Curtis Sittenfeld's less famous books but I found it compelling and surprising.

The most off-putting part of the story - the ability the twins have to predict the future, is very skilfully handled in a realistic way that only adds to the story. As always with Sittenfeld, the dialogue and description is effortless. Violet, the narrator's twin sister is a brilliant character, the narrator sympathetic and entirely believable. Rebecca Lowman does a fine job narrating this book and really brings the characters alive, including the men.

This is a really good audible book - it made a couple of long drives and my daily walks something to look forward to.

Excellent

A pair of psychic sisters in a very normal suburban setting, the prophecy of an earthquake and a constant drip of highly surprising plot twists made this a story I binged as much as I could…

A gripping story

the concept of the story was good but the characters were so unlikeable and emotionally immature that it was hard to care. The sisters were self-obsessed, rude and arrogant, for a while I thought this might be a clever device and the plot would allow for both sisters to learn how to care/compassion for others but nope, they were as unlikeable at the end as they were at the beginning of the story.

underwhelming.
