Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The inspiring story of one young man's record-breaking solo cycle journey around the world.

On 15 February 2008, Mark Beaumont pedalled through the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. 194 days and 17 hours previously, he had begun his attempt to circumnavigate the world in record time. Mark smashed the Guinness World Record by an astonishing 81 days. He had travelled more than 18,000 miles on his own through some of the harshest conditions one man and his bicycle can endure, camping wild at night and suffering from constant ailments.

The Man Who Cycled the World is the story not just of that amazing achievement but of the events that turned Mark Beaumont into the man he is today. From the early years of his free-spirited childhood in the Scottish countryside to present day, he has been equally determined not to settle for an average existence but to break free and follow his dreams.

Mark Beaumont grew up in the foothills of the Scottish Highlands. When he was 12, he cycled across Scotland, then a few years later, completed the 1,000 mile solo ride across Britain from John O'Groats to Land's End. His next long-distance ride took him the length of Italy, a journey of 1,336 miles, helping to raise £50,000 for charity. After graduating from Glasgow University, and having also qualified as a professional ski instructor, he decided against a conventional career and devoted himself full-time to raising money for his endurance adventures.

Mummy's boy rides world experiencing nothing

I was expecting an account of an exciting cycling adventure, so really struggled to get through this.
The guy seemed to be cosseted almost every KM of the way. Travelling masseurs, doctors on call and of course everything managed by mummy.
What a disappointment. Very little detail of any along the way experiences, and it just becomes a diary of how many biscuits and crisps he'd eaten and how much pop he'd drunk, at times I thought I was reading Billy Bunter's diary.
Try reading Through Sand & Snow by Charlie Walker for example if you need a comparison to this cry baby.

what an inspiration

there are many aspects to this story, firstly what can be achieved if you put your mind to it, secondly such a task needs a lot of support behind the scenes which is acknowledged throughout, third the kindness of strangers acts as a reminder that the world isn't as bad as the news headlines would make you believe, well done Mark

Only got into the story after two thirds in

Mark covered a lot during his journey, so appreciate there is a lot to touch on to give the reader a sense of the full journey. And to avoid the book being too long he has to keep his explorations brief. but it makes for a journal read, rather than a compelling travel journey at times. I found I didn't have the color or the depth of connection to some of those places. I preservered through the book still as like Mark I felt I owed him. I started to enjoy the book however 2 / 3rds in , which is very late once he went to Australia and onwards. I am not sure what changed to make it more connectible and therefore enjoyable. Overall I would recommend the book to someone already into travelling first and therefore having an interest already. But warn them beforehand that it's a slow read for the first half. Or maybe this just me. either way, well done Mark.

Fabulous listen!

Totally engrossed from the intro to the end.
I get the impression Mark is a man of few words but he feels like a close friend after listening to him for 16 hours 😂. His delivery is so very authentic and clear.
Only gripe so far is that the end of chapter 15 is definitely missing, it just cuts out mid sentence. I thought it was intended first like a cliffhanger but it's definitely missing. I'll try and listen from other phones or the desktop to confirm the finding but I don't know how to raise the issue.
Well worth a listen!

Fantastic

I read this book a few years ago after seeing the documentary of the same name. it's truly an inspirational read. if you do buy this book you do need to take a bit of caution. Because you will spend a small fortune on all things bike related and book a flight to europe and then ride a thousand miles being totally unprepared. But I will be next time.
