About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Death has a unique smell. I've been in the presence of people who have killed; I've been in rooms where people have been killed. I've seen the unspeakable things human beings are capable of. None of that puts me off my aim; I want to see those people caught, convicted and sent to jail.

Mark Williams-Thomas is a former police detective and multi-award-winning investigative journalist. He has been at the centre of some of the most high-profile investigations of recent years involving killers and paedophiles.

In this gripping and unflinching book, Mark reveals how he has pieced together these complex cases. Through tireless research and perseverance, Mark takes us on a journey of discovery gathering and pursuing new evidence, earning the trust of silent witnesses and sharing the personal toll this extraordinary job takes on him.

Mark's story is a relentless and inspiring one; it is the story of a life dedicated to justice.

Great apart from the sound quality of the recording which seemed to have a slightly muffled tone and I had to crank the volume up quite a way to hear it properly (definitely not my ears 😂 other audiobooks have generally been fine).

Great book

It is fairly interesting. The author has made a positive impact on society and has the best of intentions but it is tiring to hear him tell us how brilliant and noble he is quite so often. I also agree with another review - he pauses at very strange times which makes for a very unsettling listen.

Fairly interesting but not essential listening

Some interesting cases covered with an insight into investigative methods, however, I almost returned it after a couple of chapters due to the poor narration by the author. Mostly, books are much better when read by the author, not in this case. I did stick with it as he mentions that he has dyslexia early in the book, but I often found myself distracted by the rhythm of 4-6 words being read at a time with an inflection on the last words, then an imaginary comma or full stop I steered by the author. In this case, another narrator would have made this an enjoyable listen
