Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray, read by Jonathan Davis.

An unexpected offer threatens the bond between Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi as the two Jedi navigate a dangerous new planet and an uncertain future.

A Jedi must be a fearless warrior, a guardian of justice, and a scholar in the ways of the Force. But perhaps a Jedi’s most essential duty is to pass on what they have learned. Master Yoda trained Dooku; Dooku trained Qui-Gon Jinn; and now Qui-Gon has a Padawan of his own. But while Qui-Gon has faced all manner of threats and danger as a Jedi, nothing has ever scared him like the thought of failing his apprentice.

Obi-Wan Kenobi has deep respect for his Master, but struggles to understand him. Why must Qui-Gon so often disregard the laws that bind the Jedi? Why is Qui-Gon drawn to ancient Jedi prophecies instead of more practical concerns? And why wasn’t Obi-Wan told that Qui-Gon is considering an invitation to join the Jedi Council—knowing it would mean the end of their partnership? The simple answer scares him: Obi-Wan has failed his Master.

When Jedi Rael Aveross, another former student of Dooku, requests their assistance with a political dispute, Jinn and Kenobi travel to the Royal Court of Pijal for what may be their final mission together. What should be a simple assignment quickly becomes clouded by deceit, and by visions of violent disaster that take hold in Qui-Gon’s mind. As Qui-Gon’s faith in prophecy grows, Obi-Wan’s faith in him is tested—just as a threat surfaces which will demand that Master and Apprentice come together as never before, or be divided forever.

Probably the best of the new canon yet!

As a nerd and a Star Wars fan, I have lost count of the number of times people have told me "It's not a real" as a way of diminishing any possible validity to the lessons it teaches. Wisdom and logic would suggest to hear the lesson and judge a work on that rather than the method in which it is distributed.
In this book, the author more effectively deals with the topic of slavery, its moral and ethical impacts and the traumatic affects it has on all who come into contact with it than almost any other novel I have EVER read or heard of. If not for the words Star Wars emblazoned on its cover this book would be thought of as insightful and as a must read, sadly it is over looked and dismissed as "for children".
If you love sci-fi or Star Wars, but also have any interest in works that challenge social concepts such as slavery on new yet easy to digest ways, I strongly urge you to give this book a try. It is heartbreaking in its accuracy.

Gray is the heart and soul of Star Wars literature

Claudia Gray brings such a poetic, emotional grounding to events and eras outside of the films. Her original characters are loveable, complex and you invest in them just as much as those in/from mainstream Canon.

'Master & Apprentice' is yet another resounding success - beautifully feeding into the Skywalker Saga with more lore, more background information and more character motivations that will apply even more colour to the world we already know and love.

Thank you Claudia - please keep writing Star Wars! I am everything-crossed for Sequel Era Gray content.

As for performance; Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn is a difficult voice to capture; but Jonathan Davis takes it and runs with it in a very natural way. His handling of the rest of the cast are also very impressive; but Qui-Gon is a stand-out.

Great stuff all-round - definitely in my top five Star Wars audiobooks.

Top 5 favourite star wars books!

Possibly one of my favourites. Links into the chosen one prophecy so well. Started this as i finished the revenge of the sith novel and it gives you knowledge on how much qui gon influenced the prophecies where he got the jedi order to recognise them an not be forgotten. Johnathan davies narration was the cheery on the cake. Qui gon and kenobi voices was excellent.

Wow. Just, wow.

Excellent writing that truly gives the reader an insight into Obi Wan’s and Qui Gon’s early relationship and how it develops.
Claudia Gray manages to keep the characters we see in episode one alive. She perfectly captures the personality of all the characters and even creates beautiful new ones.
Amazing reading from Jonathon Davis, as he manages to imitate the characters’ voices perfectly.
From the music, to the blaster sound effects and the familiar voices of all the characters, this truly is the best Star Wars story book and is even better as an audio book!
Well done!

One of the best books

The book is excellent another Star Wars spinoff that in my opinion fans will love. A few similarities to darth Plagueis like the political matters. 5 stars
