About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The darkly compelling novel from the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Chalk Man, The Taking of Annie Thorne and The Other People

500 years ago: eight martyrs were burnt to death
30 years ago: two teenagers vanished without trace
Two months ago: the vicar committed suicide

Welcome to Chapel Croft.

For Rev Jack Brooks and teenage daughter Flo it's supposed to be a fresh start. New job, new home. But, as Jack knows, the past isn't easily forgotten.

And in a close-knit community where the residents seem as proud as they are haunted by Chapel Croft's history, Jack must tread carefully. Ancient superstitions as well as a mistrust of outsiders will be hard to overcome.

Yet right away Jack has more frightening concerns.

Why is Flo plagued by visions of burning girls?
Who's sending them sinister, threatening messages?
And why did no one mention that the last vicar killed himself?

Chapel Croft's secrets lie deep and dark as the tomb. Jack wouldn't touch them if not for Flo - anything to protect Flo.

But the past is catching up with Chapel Croft - and with Jack. For old ghosts with scores to settle will never rest . . .

Critic reviews

Hypnotic and horrifying, C. J. Tudor held me captive with another truly terrifying tale. Without doubt her best yet, The Burning Girls left me sleeping with the lights on (Chris Whitaker, bestselling author of Waterstones Thriller of the Month We Begin at the End)
Combines crime fiction with elements of gothic horror . . . Tudor operates on the border between credulity and disbelief, creating an atmosphere of menace
A mesmerising and atmospheric page-turner, with plenty of shocks and a surprise twist for a finale. Her best novel yet
The best book yet from C. J. Tudor
A gothic, spine-tingling roller-coaster of a story that expertly weaves the tale of eight martyrs from 500 years ago with a contemporary narrative about a priest coming to terms with their past, The Burning Girls adds yet more evidence to the fact that C. J. Tudor is a master of horror (C. J. Cooke)
It's definitely the best of Tudor's books to date, which says a lot. This is one talented author and her international reputation is well-deserved . . . This is a great novel for a dark night in a snowstorm (Margaret Cannon)
This creepy, tense thriller, packed with twists and turns, keeps the reader immersed until the shocking conclusion
Chilling . . . Mixes real historical events with fictional horror and mystery
Best-selling author C. J. Tudor returns with another page-turner

With each new CJ Tudor book I have become more of a fan however this story (and the narration) were definitely the best to date - in my opinion. Was a bit of a slow starter as I stupidly did my usual “oh this is so predictable” narrative in my head but when I finally sat down and listened with little distraction it’s fair to say the book is fantastic with so many shock twists I didn’t expect!

Fantastic

Likeable characters, good story line, over all good listen.
Narration is brilliant with these two.
Plenty action going on to keep up with, easy listen not to complicated but will keep you on your toes wondering who and why.
Worth a listen

great find

An audio equivalent of a great page turner. The main characters were believable and it kept twisting until the end. Even if you figure out the connections you are unlikely to figure out the ending

Hooked until the end
