About this listen

A riveting account of the most consequential year in English history, marked by bloody conflict with invaders on all sides.

The most famous date in history is 1066, and with good reason, since no battle in medieval history had such a devastating effect on its losers as the Battle of Hastings, which altered the entire course of English history.

The French-speaking Normans were the preeminent warriors of the 11th century and based their entire society around conflict. They were led by William "the Bastard", a formidable, ruthless warrior who was convinced that his half-Norman cousin, Edward the Confessor, had promised him the throne of England. However, when Edward died in January 1066, Harold Godwinson, the richest earl in the land and the son of a pirate, took the throne.... This left William no choice but to forcibly claim what he believed to be his right. What ensued was one of the bloodiest periods of English history, with a body count that might make even George R. R. Martin balk.

Pitched at newcomers to the subject, this book will explain how the disastrous battle changed England—and the English—forever, introducing the medieval world of chivalry, castles, and horse-bound knights. It is the first part in the new A Very, Very Short History of England series, which aims to capture the major moments of English history with humor and bite.

A great overview of a less well known period of English history, helps to make sense of lost of the period series on tv!

A brief account of the years leading up to the Norman invasion and the years after. I enjoyed this and found it had suitable depth of detail. There are numerous history books with greater depth of the period and major players, This serves as a good stepping stone to them

A good summary for those interested about this period

It’s hard to judge this book properly because the narration was so distracting. He sounded either bored, miserable or disdainful. I found it difficult to decide which and it stopped me listening to the book properly. The book itself covered a very short period of time leading up to 1066 and then, just when I was happily concluding that the book must be finished, continued on for well over another hour beyond the battle of Hastings. There is a lot of detail about various royalty and other nobles, mostly with very similar names. As a result I got very confused about whether we were hearing about the first mentioned Harold/William/Henry/Matilda et cetera or some other incarnation. I would have preferred to hear a little more about everyday life and less about royalty. I think this might be much better read as a proper book, preferably with family trees attached.

Dreary narration

This is a great introduction or overview to the lesser known backstory to 1066. The writing penetrates the somewhat difficult and inaccessible narratives that build up to the fateful year of 1066 with a great amount of humour and insight. This book is very witty at points, though I don’t think the narrator quite does it justice as it all gets read slightly monotone. A bit more expression and better sense of comic timing would improve this no end. Nevertheless, well with a listen.

Funny and informative

Definitely not to be taken too seriously but a fun introduction to the history of England around the time of 1066
