三島由紀夫に影響を与え、江戸川乱歩が「パノラマ島奇譚」を書くきっかけとなった怪奇的幻想小説。

エドガー・アラン・ポーの『アルンハイムの地所』に影響されて書かれたとされる本作。

主人公「私」と、少年時代からの友人である岡村君との対話によって浮き彫りになる、芸術に対する思想の違い。

これといって作品を生み出すでもない岡村君だったが、生きながら理想とする芸術を自分の中で構築していき、ついにそれを現実化させる時がやって来る。

莫大な財産と美しい容姿を持つ彼は、自身が設計する芸術の天国を創作するため、ユートピアともいえる庭園を作る。

ロダンなど数々の有名な彫刻を模した像などを至る所に配置し、最後には「死」という形で自らの身をもって芸術を体現する。

谷崎潤一郎

1886年（明治19年）東京日本橋で生まれる。家業が傾き、住み込みで書生となり家庭教師をしながら学業に専念。1908年に東京帝国大学国文科に入学。1910年大貫晶川、小泉鉄らと第2次『新思潮』を創刊、『誕生』や『刺青』などを発表。1911年授業料未納のため退学。1915年 石川千代と結婚、1930年離婚。関東大震災後は関西へ移住し『吉野葛』『春琴抄』を発表。

1931年 古川丁未子と結婚、1934年離婚。1935年森田松子と結婚。1959年 右手に麻痺症状が出て、口述筆記にり執筆。1965年79歳で死去。
