 大和の吉野の地を旅して、その風物自然と、その地に伝わる歴史伝説を語る谷崎潤一郎の中期の随筆的な中編小説。
同行する友人津村の話も織り込まれ情緒深い物語となっている。

「私」は友人の津村の案内で、秋の大和国吉野を旅している。

後南朝時代の歴史小説を書くのに必要な題材を集めるためである。

史実を都合よく配列するだけでも、面白い読み物を作り得るであろうが、もしその上に口碑や伝説を取り交まぜたら、一層面白くなるであろう。

私はこれだけの材料が、なにゆえ今日まで稗史小説家の注意を惹ひかなかったかを不思議に思い、誰も手を染めないうちに、自分がぜひともその材料をこなしてみたいと思っていた。
津村は親戚が吉野に住んでいるため、私を案内してくれることになった。旅の途中、津村は自分の生い立ちのことなども話してくれた。
津村は幼い頃に亡くした母を知るために、以前にも母の生家のある吉野を訪れていた。そして津村は今回吉野に来るにあたって一つの目的があったのだった。

谷崎潤一郎

1886年（明治19年）東京日本橋で生まれる。家業が傾き、住み込みで書生となり家庭教師をしながら学業に専念。1908年に東京帝国大学国文科に入学。1910年大貫晶川、小泉鉄らと第2次『新思潮』を創刊、『誕生』や『刺青』などを発表。1911年授業料未納のため退学。1915年 石川千代と結婚、1930年離婚。関東大震災後は関西へ移住し『吉野葛』『春琴抄』を発表。
1931年 古川丁未子と結婚、1934年離婚。1935年森田松子と結婚。1959年 右手に麻痺症状が出て、口述筆記にり執筆。1965年79歳で死去。©2022 PanRolling Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
