 老嬢はお互いを理解し合う老猫と一緒に暮らしていた。毎朝教会へ行くほかは部屋に引きこもるのが好きで、純潔でないものを毛嫌いした。
猫が外の世界を知って自由に生きるのを目の当たりにした老嬢の心の変化が描かれる短編小説。

老嬢は郊外の家で老猫と暮らしていた。毎朝6時に教会へ出かけでお祈りをして、終わるとすぐに帰った。
街は危険だらけのように思われて恐ろしいから、猫と部屋に引きこもって過ごすのが好きなのだ。老嬢は純潔でないものを嫌い、色恋めいたものを見ると真っ赤になって怒った。
あるとき猫が戸口から庭へ飛び出した。自由を得た猫は本能のままに生きる。言うことを聞かず、勝ち誇ったような目で見てくる猫を老嬢は毛嫌いし、怒鳴ったり蹴ったり叩いたりする。


モーリス・ルヴェルはフランスの作家。「フランスのポー」と言われ、恐怖や悲哀を主題とした残酷物語の短編を多く残しています。
日本においても新青年等に翻訳紹介され、探偵小説の読者を熱狂させたほか、江戸川乱歩、夢野久作、小酒井不木などに絶賛されました。
乱歩は「淋しさ、悲しさ、怖さがルヴェルの短編の随所に漂っている」と言い、久作は「探偵小説で一番好きなのはルヴェルとポーだ」と言っています。
またラヴクラフトは自身のエッセイの中でルヴェルを絶賛し、アメリカと日本でのルヴェルの認知に多く貢献しました。
