探偵小説の筋を考えていた私は、上野の動物園でふと妙な人物に出会う。
男は私の正体に気付き、愛読者であると告白した。

そして、自分の体験した不思議な経験談を話し始める。

「彼」がかつて住んでいた裏手の「峡谷」はビルディングとビルディングのおりなす人工的な谷であった。
そこには建物そのものに奇妙な暗合があった。
その二つのビルディングは峡谷側だけがどこからどこまで寸分違わぬ作りになっていたのである。
この「峡谷」の五階の北の端の窓で首吊り自殺があり、しかもそれが、時を隔てて三度も繰り返された。

三人目の犠牲者を偶然見つけてしまった「彼」は、恐れおののいてその場を立ち去ろうとした時に、向かいの建物の窓から人間の顔が覗いていたことに気付く。

こちらを見てその顔はニヤリと笑った。

後日、「彼」は警察署で医学博士の目羅博士に出会う。

博士こそが、あの時向かいの建物からのぞいたあの顔だと気付いた「彼」は博士を疑い、真相を突き止めようとするが……

江戸川乱歩（えどがわ・らんぽ） 日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。©2019 PanRolling. Horror Mystery
