江戸時代初期に肥後藩の重職であった阿部一族が上意討ちで全滅した事件を題材に創作された歴史短編小説。封建社会にあって対面や評判を気にして生きても、己を貫こうとした人々の物語。


森鴎外
1862年（文久2年）島根県に生まれる。森家は津和野藩の典医を務めた。10歳の時、父と上京し、官立医学校に入るためにドイツ語を学ぶ。1873年、東京大学医学部に12歳で入学。卒業後は陸軍軍医副になり、東京陸軍病院に勤務し、ドイツの衛生制度を調べるためにドイツに留学。1889年「小説論」、翻訳戯曲を発表するなど軍医でありながら文筆活動をしていた。「陸軍省医務局長まで務めたが、1916年に退官。その後、東京国立博物館に就任。1922年に60歳で死去。©2022 PanRolling Asian World Literature
