「武鑑」収集の途上で抽斎の名に遭遇し、心を惹かれた鴎外は、その事跡から交友関係、趣味、性格、家庭生活、子孫、親戚にいたるまでを克明に調べ、生きいきと描きだす。
当時ほとんど未知であった抽斎の探索行がそのまま書き込まれるとともに、その妻・五百(いほ)をはじめとして、周辺人物も生き生きと描かれ、さらには抽斎没後の子孫の行く末にまで及んでいる。封建治下の文化人の安心立命の形がくっきりと浮かび上がり、森鴎外第一の傑作として世評が高い作品。

森鴎外
1862年（文久2年）島根県に生まれる。森家は津和野藩の典医を務めた。10歳の時、父と上京し、官立医学校に入るためにドイツ語を学ぶ。1873年、東京大学医学部に12歳で入学。卒業後は陸軍軍医副になり、東京陸軍病院に勤務し、ドイツの衛生制度を調べるためにドイツに留学。1889年「小説論」、翻訳戯曲を発表するなど軍医でありながら文筆活動をしていた。「陸軍省医務局長まで務めたが、1916年に退官。その後、東京国立博物館に就任。1922年に60歳で死去。©2022 PanRolling Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
