 「これは、わたしが小さいときに、村の茂平というおじいさんから聞いたお話です」 兵十が川で魚を捕っているのを、いたずら好きなごんがみつけた。兵十がびくから目を離した隙に、ごんは兵十が捕った魚やウナギを逃がしてしまう。それから10日ほど後、兵十の母親の葬列を見たごんは、あのとき逃がしたウナギは兵十が母親のために用意していたものだと悟り、反省する。自分と同じひとりぼっちになった兵十に同情したごんは、ウナギを逃がした償いの意味もあって、鰯を盗んで兵十の家に投げ込む。だが、兵十が盗んだと勘違いした鰯屋が、兵十を殴りつけ、ごんは再び反省する。それからごんは毎日山で拾った栗や、時には松茸を届けるようになる。兵十は毎日届けられる栗を不思議に思い加助に相談すると、「それは神様のおかげだ」と言われる。その翌日、ごんが家に忍び込んだ気配に気づいた兵十はまたいたずらに来たのだと思い、母親にウナギを食べさせられなかった無念もあり、ごんを撃ってしまう。兵十は倒れたごんの横に栗が散らばっているのに気づきます……。ごんの死という結末に悲しくやり切れない気持ちになってしまいますが、心の奥底に大切な何かを感じさせてくれる、何度聴いても涙がにじんでしまうお話です。 ほか「王様と靴屋」「二ひきの蛙」「去年の木」「落とした一銭銅貨」を収録。Pan Rolling, Inc.
