二人の男が話していた。
いつかも汽車で一緒になったとAが切り出し、Bも思い出したという。AにとってBは見ず知らずのAに突然蜜柑を勧めてくる不思議な人であった。
話はその時の続きに至る。そうこうしているうつに隣の一等車から興奮した人々がどやどやとやって来た。その一人である車掌はBに向かって「ちょっと君、失敬ですが」と切り出した。Bはある貴婦人の指輪を掏ったと疑われていたのだった。Aは全く動じず潔白を主張するBの態度をなかなかのものだと思っていた。
互いに腹の読み合いのような会話を交わす中、Bは口調を変えてこう言った。
「オイ、いい加減にしらばくれっこは止そうじゃねえか」
その言葉にAもフンと鼻で笑う。そして二人はその指輪の行方について話し出すのだが……

日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。(c)2018 Pan Rolling
