河津三郎は両親と死に別れ、兄弟もなく、その上食うに困らない財産に恵まれた青年であった。彼は奇妙な素人探偵を開業して、一人で探偵を楽しんでいた。

四月五日の深夜、三郎は隅田川の橋を訪れ、よじ登った鉄骨の上に横たわって、人間観察をしていた。

そこに現れたのはスーツケースを大切そうに抱えた一人の男だ。彼は何かに追われているかのように、さかんに辺りを気にしていた。彼はスーツケースから中身を取り出すと、空になった鞄だけを川に捨てた。彼の奇妙な行動は三郎の好奇心を揺さぶるのに十分すぎた。

三郎は男を尾行し、その大切そうにしていた荷物を拝借すると、滑車に麻縄、汚れたブラウスという奇妙なものばかりだった。

男の尾行を続けた三郎は、上野公園で焚火をして札束を焼く、その前で狂ったように笑うという彼の奇行を目の当たりにする。

三郎は訝しげに様子を窺っていたが、男はその足で五重塔に忍び込むと最上階で首を吊って死んだのであった……©2020 PanRolling Horror Mystery
