＜内容紹介＞
「幼きものに」
これは遠い外国で働く父が、日本の叔父に預けた、太郎、次郎、三郎、お末の四人の子供たちに、三年の間、外国で見たり聞いたりした話を贈りたいと思って、小さな本にまとめたお話の数々でした。
それは七十七のお話に渡り、動物のお話や、様々な国の暮らす人々の話や、日本では見ることの無い景色の話など、多岐にわたるものでした。
そして、父はそれらのお話を、三年ぶりに再会した、愛する子供たちに、話して聞かせるのでした……
「ふるさと」
父が「幼きものに」を息子たちに贈ってから三年後のこと、13歳になった三郎は、かなりの長い間信州木曽のおじさんの家に養われており、兄や妹たちの住む父の家に時折手紙を書いては、その様子を知らせていました。
父が育った故郷でもある信州木曽での出来事は、これもまた父が子供たちに話し聞かせてやりたいと思っていたものでした。そのお話の数々も、全て合わせると七十にも及んだのです。
父は子供たちに向けて、「幼きものに」と同じように、この「ふるさと」を書き記したのでした……
島崎藤村（しまざき・とうそん）
詩人・小説家。筑摩県馬籠村（現岐阜県中津川市）出身。本名は春樹。明治学院在学中に洗礼を受けるとともに文学への関心を強め、北村透谷らと「文学界」を創刊。また詩集『若菜集』で浪漫派詩人として大きな業績を残した。のち散文に転じ、『破戒』で自然主義の小説家として出発する。1929年から「中央公論」に連載された『夜明け前』は自伝的藤村文学の集大成となった。芸術院会員。1943年没、72才。(c)2018 Pan Rolling
