 故郷である木曾路の馬籠宿を舞台に、自身の父をモデルにした物語といわれる。幕末から明治の時代の変化に抗い、やがて絶望にむしばまれていく主人公・半蔵の一生を描く。藤村が晩年に7年ほどの歳月をかけて執筆した大作。

木曾路はすべて山の中である―。江戸から京都をむすぶ街道の一部がここ木曾路だ。長い渓谷が尽きたところ、西よりする木曾路の入口に馬籠宿はあった。宿役人を勤める本陣の当主吉左衛門には跡継ぎ息子の半蔵がいた。半蔵は平田派の国学を熱心に学び、王政復古を望んでいたが、やがて幕末から明治の文明開化を迎え、世相は半蔵の理想と異なる方向に変わっていく。信じるものを否定され、思いに反することばかりの半蔵は、次第に精神をむしばまれ……。


島崎藤村(本名春樹）は、明治学院在学中にキリスト教に入信し、西洋文学に影響を受け、北村透谷らと雑誌「文学界」を創刊しました。
それまでの和歌や俳句などの定型詩や漢詩とは異なる新しい文体の詩人として出発し、近代詩を確立していきました。

その後、小説執筆へと転じます。あるがままの現実を描き、且つ人間の内面を正直に描くという、写実主義と浪漫主義の両方を併せ持った、自然主義文学の代表的な作家となりました。

また、在籍期間は短かったものの、東京音楽学校にてヴァイオリン、ピアノ、コーラスを学んだという経歴も持っており、音楽に関する知識も豊富だったことがうかがえます。
出会った人物から様々な影響を受け、新しいものに対する情熱と探求心を常に持ち、それが創作の糧となっていたのでしょう。

1913年から3年間渡仏した際には、日本に残してきた4人の子どもたちに土産話として聞かせるために童話集をまとめています。
