 紅雲町珈琲屋こよみ第8弾。
紅雲町でお草が営むコーヒー豆と和食器の店「小蔵屋」では、近頃町にやってきた親切で物腰がスマートな男のことが話題になっていた。
ある日彼は小蔵屋を訪ね、お草に告げる。
「私は、良一なんです」
お草が婚家に残し、3歳で水の事故で亡くなった息子・良一。男はなんの目的で良一を騙るのか、それとも、あの子が生き返ったのか──？
小蔵屋の近所のもり寿司は、味が落ちたうえ、新興宗教や自己啓発セミナーと組んでの商売を始め、近頃評判が悪い。
そんな折、紅雲町に50歳前後の男が現れる。新規事業の調査のためと言い、短期でマンションに滞在しているが、親切で、清潔な雰囲気に「なんだかお草さんみたいだった」という客もいて、評判になっていた。
その男が、お草のもとを訪ねてきて、自分は息子の良一だと名乗る。
お草が一人で家を出た後、3歳で水の事故で亡くなったはずの息子、良一。
その男によると、じつは良一は助け出されたものの、父と後妻の間に子供が生まれて居場所がなくなり、女中だったキクの子として育てられたという。
そして、その証拠として、お草と別れた夫との間で交わされた手紙や思い出の品を取り出して見せる。
詐欺だと考えて冷たく男をあしらうものの、お草の心は千々に乱れる。
もし、あの子が生きていたのだとしたら？　
真相を確かめるために、お草は米沢にキクを訪ねる――。
嘘は、人生の禍となるが、ときに救いとなることもある。
