Summary

小さな村の分教場に新任の大石先生がやってきた。1年生12人がはじめて受け持つ子どもたち。大石先生と子どもたちの成長、戦争や不況によって変えられてしまう運命を、約18年間にわたって追う。戦乱の世の中を生きる市民の姿を描いた物語。

瀬戸内海の村の岬の分教場に、新任の大石先生がやってきた。子どもたちから慕われる一方、村の大人たちからはつらくあたられることも。あるとき大石先生が大けがをして長い間学校を休むと、村のみんなは大石先生の存在の大きさに気づき、やっと本当に心が通い合う。やがて戦争の色が濃くなるにつれ学校教育も軍国主義に染まっていく。大石先生は教職を離れ、生徒たちはそれぞれの運命をたどる。戦後、かつての教え子たちと同窓会で再会。思い出の写真を見ながら語り合う。
