教養として、あるいは確かなビジョンを持つための武器として「世界史」を知っていることは大変重要だが、いざ世界史を学ぼうとすると大量の歴史知識が登場する。どうすればよいのかと悩む読者のための一冊を、在野の物理学研究者で『現代経済学の直感的方法』などの著者である長沼伸一郎が上梓した。著者は歴史家E・H・カーに倣って「過去を知るためにはまず『みるべき未来』を定めることが肝要」と述べ、過去の古典でなされた予言を物理の視点で抽象化して、さらに未来に延長し、「みるべき未来」を叙述する。そして歴史上の覇権の構造を見抜き、世界史をその構造で捉えることを提案。そうすることによって、世界史を俯瞰的に把握することができるようになるのだ。

さらに「イスラム文明が西欧に敗れて立場を逆転される契機になったのは、微積分学を受け入れなかったこと」と述べ、科学上の発見が当時の思想や社会科学の新たな概念の創出に影響を及ぼした可能性を指摘するなど、「文明の理数系史観」（仲野徹氏）とも呼ぶべき清新な歴史観を提唱する。
