 大儲けできると船に乗った荒くれ者達、ところが･･･
荒くれ者のガルールは、波止場で帆船の運転士モッフに声を掛けられる。酒をおごってくれたモッフは、ガルールに儲け話に乗らないかという。
船の中で反乱を起こして積み荷をいただくから加勢してほしいというのだ。腕っぷしの強いのを10人、明日の晩までに集めてくれといわれ、
どうにかガルールは仲間を集め、ラ・ベル・フィユ号の船倉に潜む。ガルール同様、名うての悪漢と手下のごろつき達である。そして船は出帆し四日経ったが、
ガルール達にはなんのつなぎもない。遂に食料も底を尽き、我慢しきれなくなったガルール達は甲板に出た。甲板の上には誰もいなかった。船を操縦できる者はいない。
困って船を探し回ると船室の一つにモッフがいた。


モーリス・ルヴェルはフランスの作家。「フランスのポー」と言われ、恐怖や悲哀を主題とした残酷物語の短編を多く残しています。
日本においても新青年等に翻訳紹介され、探偵小説の読者を熱狂させたほか、江戸川乱歩、夢野久作、小酒井不木などに絶賛されました。
乱歩は「淋しさ、悲しさ、怖さがルヴェルの短編の随所に漂っている」と言い、久作は「探偵小説で一番好きなのはルヴェルとポーだ」と言っています。
またラヴクラフトは自身のエッセイの中でルヴェルを絶賛し、アメリカと日本でのルヴェルの認知に多く貢献しました。
