「くだんのはは」は、1968年に「話しの特集」で発表されました。『召集令状』と同様に、その物語の背景には、小松左京の戦争体験が大きく影響を与えています。
『くだんのはは』は、戦争末期のつらい日々を過ごす、小松左京の分身のような旧制中学の生徒である主人公の語りで、超自然的で恐ろしい「くだん」に纏わる、大きな渦のなかに吸い込まれるような、逃れがたい物語が展開されます。
ホラーとして大変評価が高いため、自身の作品集だけでなく、様々なホラーや幻想系のアンソロジーに選ばれ、未だに人気がある作品です。
作者、小松左京（こまつさきょう、大阪生まれ、1931年 - 2011年）は日本を代表するＳＦ作家。1961年「地には平和を」でＳＦ作家としてデビュー。「日本沈没」「復活の日」など映画化された長編の名作や、「ゴルディアスの結び目」などの短編小説の名作も多数執筆している。又、1970年の大阪万博のテーマ館のサブ・プロデューサー、1990年の国際花と緑の博覧会の総合プロデューサーを務めるなど、その才能は多岐にわたりました。
