Стихотворение "Лесной царь" – перевод баллады И.В. Гёте.

Наиболее известны русские переводы В. Жуковского и А. Фета. В.А. Жуковский перевел поэму в 1818 году. Произведение основано на древней легенде об умирающем мальчике, которого призывает в свое царство Лесной царь. В центре сюжета баллады диалог отца с сыном, скачущих на коне через лес вечерней порой. Мальчику кажется, что его манит к себе лесной царь:

"Дитя, я пленился твоей красотой:

Неволей иль волей, а будешь ты мой".

Баллада вдохновила многих музыкантов. Наиболее известна композиция Франца Шуберта 1815 года.

В книгу также вошли стихотворения и баллады Василия Андреевича Жуковского, изучение которых предусмотрено школьной программой: "Светлана", "Спящая царевна", "Загадка" и другие.
